It depends on what you're doing, i've fooled around with garage band a little but I found no use for it with what i'm wanting to do. Mess around on it a little and find out.

EDIT: lol there is also a garagebandmusic review site. You probably want to know about the recording program. I know nothing about that.

garageband sucks. im sorry i hate it. ive played with it and found no good use. its something that someone could play with, but dont expect any serious productivity to come from it.
guessing you are mac-based...
theres a bunch of apps out there...
protools, cubase, digital performer, logic, nuendo....
i use protools, and its not the most user friendly one out there. im really just getting good with it. the features are almost, like hidden.. it took me 3 nights to figure out how to punch in, but then i got it and said, well duh! 6 months later, im just really working with it.
