This guy I know has a slew of Aphex Mic Pres, I don't know a model Number or anything, but i don't think they are too expensive. All of his stuff sounds pretty good but I havn't had the chance to use it myself and compare it to something else. Do any of you have experience with any kinda of Aphex products, Thanks.........Josh.

I had the Aphex 107 as my first external mic pre. I used it with an AT-4033 into my Yamaha MD4s (multitrack minidisc). It sounded decent, much better than my SM58 directly into the Yamah pres. I've since upgraded to a Great River MP2, so I don't use the 107 anymore. If you like the sound your friend is getting, so for it. It would be a dcent "starter-pre" (kind of like training pants!). It provides phantom power and other goodies. I found it doesn't have as much detail or gain as my Great River, but it sounded ok at the time.

Oh, the other model pre (the 1100 or something) is much more expensive (~$1800 or so) and is in an entirely different league.
Good luck!

I have 2 of the aphex 2-channel compellors. It took me a year to like them because they are so transparent. I use them on toms and vocals.

On vocals, the compellors are not nearly strong enough to compress vox, so what I do is run it to another compressor after it: mic pre--aphex compellor--dbx160a in that order. This takes some of the load off the 160a and I get a really clean and smooth sound from vocals from doing this.

maddrumer, I second what gordone said as I also own/use a 107.
It has a nice decent sound to it. If it's any help Guitar Center was
blowing them out lately for around $150 new.
