Damned if I do
...the 57 mod in the new issue of TapeOp? I've boiled bass strings before, but never a microphone!

Is this the same mod they talked about on PSW? I think they pulled the transformer or something???

I just received my copy an hour ago. I haven't quite read that much yet.

I just looked on the tapeop mb and from what I saw was you just take the transformer out.

I love this quote from A-Barr over at tapeop.
This seems pretty crazy to me, if Shure could make an 80 dollar mic sound like a 350 dollar mic by actually using fewer parts, I'd think they would have figured that out. Although maybe that's what the SM7 is, that and the 57 and 58 are all based on the Unidyne III capsule, according to their site. Anyone have all 3 and feel like doing a comparison?

I haven't gotten my issue yet. I like their little mic mods they put in there. A couple years ago they had an article showing how to build a pair of condenser mics by using XLR connectors. I had a buddy who made them, and we used them for drum overheads. I really liked them. My buddy moved away though, and since then I've been looking for that article to make a pair of my own. Does anybody know where to find that article?

sorry... very little electronic experience speaking, but how do you locate the transformer??? and what was this about boiling the mic??? I'd love to hear more about mic mods... especially dynamics. Thanks a lot fellas... and thanks for keeping it interesting in here!!!

If I had more than 1 57, I'd probably give it a go. But, as is, it is doing ok when I need it. Plus, I'm pretty lazy.

Search here for "Tape Op Mic", it's been discussed somewhere before.

When you unscrew the two pieces of the body, the transformer is inside, I recall it's wax potted, hence the boiling to get it out.

ok. thanks a lot. do you know if this is a good idea or not??? is it safe to do, or will i run the risk of it sounding like crap and not being able to put the transformer back in??? thanks a lot!!!

The mod is just remove the transformer that's it.

You put the part of the mic in boiling water to remove the glue/wax/plastic that holds the transformer in place.

I think I would skip the water and use a heat gun.

Here is the artical you were looking for:

http://www.prosoundweb.com/recording/tapeop/buildmic/buildmic_16_1.shtml

I have just started Makeing a Bunch of these Mics and they work really well accept I have it slightly Modified from what is on the Tape-Op Site which Cuts down on Self Noise and Eliminates any RF or EM Interferance and since these Mics only need about 3v and not 9v I changed it to useing 2 Small watch batteries so I can Fit the Batteries in with the Mic as opposed to have an external Power supply....

Cheers

So this is supposed to make it sound like an SM7? Can someone put the artical into their own words as not to infinge on the copyright.. actually I think you can copy thw whole artical and just put the copyright credits in here, or at least the impartant noteable parts. Just cite them.

Josh

Nothing to it.
Just remove the transformer.

It will give you more low end.
Volume will be down 10db

Must be the April Fools issue - I didn't get it yet.

Hmmm, was working before, but now it isn't. I know they have been changing things as far as software/servers, give it time, it will be back up.
