busboy, you can explain that until you are blue in the face but those that disagree still will disagree....goes back to my earlier post that if a rapper only raps then he/she is not a singer....im not dissing rappers because it is a cool vocal style if done right, sucks if done wrong, just like singing......

jon x - that guy is called a hype man.

rapping isn't singing because although words do have tones the rhythmic quality is more important. i saw some guy post on a newsgroups that he hated hip hop cause "most rap idiots rap out of tune" which is clearly nonsensical because it's spoken, not sung. it's just speaking but with extra projection and very precise rhythm. i mean a bass drum is lower pitched than a snare but you wouldn't say that a drummer was playing a tune....

incidentally... you would say that a drum was out of tune, if it was.

I love these threads.... Thanks Mr. Q.

No a rapper is NOT a singer.

Remember when Jim Morrison did that spoken word thing with the music in behind....????

Poets are NOT singers.

So are you gonna tell me that every author who does them audiobooks is a singer cause there is some sort of "tone" coming out of his/her voice...

No!

Authors dictating their books are NOT singers.

Now listen yall... We can debate this subject and tear it apart and get all tenical and literal about it but in a general sense, of course, with exceptions..

A Rapper is NOT a singer.

End of story.

NEXT.......Is a Canadian a Human? :D

BUSBOY gets my vote

BUSBOY gets my vote:

It seems anything MELODIC gets to be called singing.

As busboy stated LAURYN HILL : rapped & sung, but she won 5 grammy's for best HIP HOP ARTIST, cause the majority of the album was in RAP FORM, followed with RAP instrumentation.

But Ja-Rule, Jay-Z, DMX (with his preacher melodic style) are still all RAPPERS with a MELODIC, SWINGY, CATCHY TONE.

If the audience of today never hears REAL SINGING then it's a no brainer that they would consider rap singing. The main goal is to reach KIDS, what do they listen to: RAP, what makes most money: RAP: Corporate world wins, KIDS get what they like and on it goes.

It's sad but.... (I'm not even gonna get into it)
