Is a pre-amp samething as Direct Input box? nt

No. A direct box is more of a impedence matching device (the passive ones anyway) meant primarily for instruments and a mic pre amp is just that, and amplifier that boosts the weak signal that a microphone puts out up to line level. There's a bit more to it but that's it in a nut shell.

Em no the above is not technically correct.

You can get "pre-amps" for guitar (see Samsamp PSA-1 and Line 6 POD) as well as other insturment. Neither of these kind have anything to do with mics... so saying that it is always a mic affair isnt really correct.

However, what is right is that yes DI boxes are very basic impedence matching devices. A pre-amp, no matter what kind it is, usually has a signal processing quality to it. e.g. most mics preams have a built in compressor, limited e.q. etc

Actually.... you're both wrong! (sorta!)

In basic terms, a DI is simply an impedance matching device - no gain circuitry is associated to it.

A preamp on the other hand, deals with signal level - gain circuitry to increase or adjust signal level.

Add-on stuff - modelling, processing and other stuff is really just fluff that blurs the distinction between the 2 basic definitions..........

No points awarded this round! ;)
