Is a LP Studio a "real" LP?

I checked out a '92 LP Studio a couple of year ago. I went to the guys house who was selling it, along with a number of new and used Standard and Custom LP's (3 or 4 of them, I can't recall the exact number right now), and it was the first guitar I grabbed. I thought, d@mn!! This is a NICE guitar!! So I put it down and tried all the remaining LP's he had ...none of them had the same feel. Yeah, they looked a lot nicer, fewer dings and such, but none of them played or "sang" the same way that one did. I went back to the LP Studio and played it again, and I had to force myself to leave after about 20 minutes of playing so that I didn't make another (stoopid) impulse buy that I'd regret later!


...I called him up the moment I got back home and talked him down to $350.00 for the LP Studio, and I picked it up the next day!!! Out of the 9 or so electric 6-strings I own, this guitar is still my favorite!!

EDIT: Sorry for the crappy photos, but they were taken the day I checked out the guitar with an old camera. The only current photos I have of it are "action shots" from gigs and such where you can't really see the guitar as well.
 
What it boils down to

is I would never buy a guitar I hadn't played first, whether a Squier Affinity or a D'Angelico, unless I was assured that I could return it if I just plain old didn't like it.

if the US/AUS exchange rate takes a significantly favorable turn for the US, because I just can't get that guitar out of my head.

Nice of you to remember. Actually, believe it or not, I found that guitar (amongst others) here at HR's "Free Adds" forum....... http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=109543 ........., we purchased all the LP's the guy was selling and imported them from Canada.

Besides raising a family, practicing drums, keyboards, guitar, singing, and learning how to use all this outboard and in the box crap I haven't taken the time to learn how to set up a guitar properly. I'm sure I'll get around to it. In the meantime, I've an album to record. :rolleyes:

For the most part, regardless of the manufacturer, be it high end or not, you'll need to have the guitar setup after purchasing it.

Yes. I have played and recorded both. The Les Paul Standards are the most consistant sounding LPs still. There are as many reasons as people will write, but that is what I find.
 
I've been playing a studio for the past week on lend and I have to say its the nice guitar I've ever layed my fingers upon, I could'nt tell you the difference between a studio and a deluxe but they are definitly amazingly crafted guitars with great tone and shape. Just don't bash it til you've tried it you might like it more, just try everything you can!!
 
Well....

I picked up a rootbeer Studio Premium Plus... I couldn't resize the pictures I took so I pulled this one off teh net. It looks just like it.

Anyway, I played a shitload of them, and really disliked the $799 mahagony studios, found a few of the other studios I liked but disliked the colors. This one plays like a dream. :)

I have to ask. Being a denzen of the antipodies the term rootbeer is familiar due to the enormous weight of US cultural baggage we carry but the detail isn't known.
I surmize/assume/guess/thunk that it may be an equiv of what we refer to as Ginger Beer - a drink made by the fermentation of ground/powdered ginger with sugar.
Am I even close?
Oh, nice guitar casey - play it a sweetly as you sing please.

Yes - but root beer is made from sasparilla root and is very dark brown compared to ginger beer's amber color, and is generally a soft drink and not fermented.
 
that's a sweet looking guitar supercreep. so what's your opinion now? are the studios the same? not in my experience.
 
All the ones I played were slightly different from eachother. The biggest difference is appearance and playability.

Some of the fretwork on the studios was less than stellar, and a few of them had really nice action and feel.

The plain mahagony studios had pretty uniformly slow feel to the neck, and the fretwork was worst of the lot.

The Studio Plus played a lot more like the standards and customs I played.

/shrugs/

They were all pretty nice guitars. I didn't feel I was missing anything at all by taking home the studio over the standard. I certainly didn't hear any difference between the two that wasn't just the difference between two different guitars of the same type.
 
i have a studio made in 93', and an 04' standard. i love them both, and it just depends on what you like i guess.

when i bought the standard, i played every LP for sale in Calgary (about 40 or more), and i didn't like any of them with the exception of the one i bought.

We don't have that down under. There was a drink that was called that for a while but wasn't.
