are the 58 and 57 the same, just with different windscreens?

It close enough... but, the different grills make the the two mic's different... and therefore, removing the grill from a 58 doesn't make it a 57.

I think its the other way arround, in a pinch Ill use my 58 if My 57s are all busy. It usually mics amps wonderfully

it's my understanding that they're the same capsules, but the differences in the grills/windscreens makes the pickup pattern differ between the two.
i've used my sm58s with and without "balls" in just about every place i would use a 57 when i've had to. they do a fine job at that.
personally, i prefer a 57 to a 58, and i prefer the 545 to either/both. and beyond that, i prefer the sennheiser e835 to all of the above.

The capsule is recessed further in the 58, too.

They sound the same to me with the ball remove on the the 58. I would be amazed if anyone could hear the difference. For micing an amp It works fine with the ball in place.
There have been hundreds if not thousands of live recordings made with the 58 and they sound fine.

I’m not expert, Audiophile or engineer. Maybe it’s just me: but I think that the 57 sounds completely different than a 58.
To me:
*The 58 has a quite noticeable upper midrange accentuation. I don’t feel it subtle in the slightest.
*The 57 goes waaayyy lower and the high end presents is pretty ‘hey look at me.’
Of coarse I’m sure you can get them to sound exactly the same with changing the windscreens or whatever and using a lot of eq, they do act the same way. But using them dry I wouldn’t even call them the same thing.

Buy replacement screens for 57's
They will fit the 58 body turning them into 57's(or close enough you can't tell the diff.)
