"just got orders to Iraq" can mean a lot of things, you have $2500 to spend, fine... first off what branch of service and where will you be at in Iraq?

Saw a recruiter oh... 8 years ago I believe, Marines. 5 1/2 active duty (stop lossed because of the war) 3 1/2 years as a KC-130 Navigator.
You're heading to Iraq I don't know if I'd worry about a laptop. I've been to Bahrain and Turkey both with established camps, you'll be staying in a tent without Internet, maybe unless things have sky rocketed since '03. Generally the Moral tents have all the Internet connections so your computer will be only for personal use, maybe d/l some porn before you go, but other than that I'd save your money, which I'm sure you'd be making an ass load, and no matter what you were planning on recording it won't be that great of an environment. You're atleast a WO or better, being an Apache pilot and all, and going to Iraq will be tax free, plus your flight pay and comrats, which you probably won't be spending at all while you're over there for (6-12 months), save your money until you get back.

You just getting out of training?

yeah, just finished up at rucker was enlisted for 9 years before i woke up, i just wanted a little setup to past the time on, so my skills dont perish, thanks for the info.

That's cool, not that I helped you to much though. Besides the laptop how much gear are they going to let you hump over there? You plan on taking a guitar or something as well?

That's cool, my buddy has gone to the "darkside", he's heading your way as a WO eventually and hopefully Apaches, "got tired of civilian life" after we got out of the Corps, so now he's headed your way =)

Imho..........

buy the lightest level III vest you can get. wear it to shit, wear it to eat, wear it to play BB in the dust. sleep in it. get a good small gps to keep on you at ALL times. get one of these or something like http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=13878&memberId=12500226
get a pistol that will work in the fuckin dust, my personal fav any good version of the 1911, colt, kimber, even springfield. get it taken apart here and totally degreased and then dry lubed with graphite or the like, just like for extreme cold weather. 50 rnds worth of clips, 1000 rnds to take with, tritium sights for the gun. and I wish i could suggest what kind of small personal radio to take but i don't know. two good pair of shoes, like mid high hiking shoes. that's most of 2500 if you get good shit, spend the rest for give aways to your ground crew, like a bunch of snaplights or phonecards (probably not exactly what you want, but think about it(oh yeah, baby wipes)). oh, oh, yeah, a good 3 season coat that will breath a little but stop the wind.

don't take or eat ANYTHING from ANY person not KNOWN TO YOU to be US MILITARY. Poison is a weapon of war. see if your local doc can give you like a one time scrip for 30 codeine tablets, good for pain, the shits, seasicknes (i know, the desert), vomiting, etc. save them for your direst need, and hope you can throw them away your last day their.

the apache was designed to kill t72's coming into germany, in a combined arms scenerio. the big brains in iraq will probably not deploy you that way. you could be on your own in a matter of seconds. put all this stuff in an 'oh shit' bag and see if you can find a place on the apache for it.

you are going to a place where a whole shitload of people spend all their waking hours figuring out new and novel ways to kill you. they are not worried about recording anything but a video of your ship or your buddies being shot out of the air.

I hope no one ever shoots at you, I hope nothing ever bad happens to you or yours, but over their, that will be up to you.

god bless you

I don't think he has to worry about most of the first part of that, it'll be issued to him most likely, but I understand where you're coming from I generally get tuned up after a few beers myself (see beginning of thread, though I think that was somewhat mild) :D

I think he wants to know mainly what kinda of laptop, softsynth, and controller to take with him/buy. I'm pretty sure you can help him with the laptop issue, everything else I dunno.

ive got a pretty good survival kit, a nice SIG, did not think of dry lube for it though, thanks.

you will want to take it all apart and get it totally dry of any oil or grease.

you know the alaskamo's are suposed to have 20 words for snow, well they have 20 words for sand, from superfine, get in anywhere face powder type to coarse grit.

remember, killer and agression in the air, rabbit on the ground.

very best wishes for you. try to avoid the issue tritium watch or compass. they can show up on a night vision scope a long ways away. please don't count on the issue survival stuff to keep you alive. more guys are killed on or around base than taken it to the enemy, hence a lite weight (relativly) and cooler (relativly) vest you can wear absofuckinlutely everywhere, or you won't wear it anywhere.

come back
