"Into The Void" cover WITH VOCALS

I think you did a good job with this one.

Again, the guitar tones are pretty close to the original. The bass has that loose, almost flabby tone to it that is very distinctive on the original and I think you captured that very well. It pops out pretty loudly at times through the mix though.

Your friend did a good job too. It's tough because although Ozzy's voice came out lower on the first two records, by this one he was starting to perfect that high pitched whiny trademark vocal style, and no one can really mimic that I don't think. I don't think you're going for exact replicas here anyway, so not a big deal.

I liked the drums better on this one than on war pigs. I actually think the drums and particularly the cymbals sound pretty bad on the album, so I wouldn't try to mirror that. I do think the cymbals in this mix are a little too loud and bright though? I'd like to hear it with those brought down some to make it a little warmer sounding overall.

Sehr gut! :)

Thank you.

The bass is really just DI with some distortions on the frequencies above 400 Hz and a lot of compression. Playing finger style like Geezer helps too. I automated the bass to come through really strongly on some parts. I think that Geezer's playing have been a bit overlooked by Tony over the past few decades and I like to highlight some of his great riffs and parts in my covers.

I don't think that I'll find many people who can do a perfect Ozzy but I'm really excited about people who are giving it a bit of their own flair. He said that he's going to re-track the vocal tomorrow actually, he didn't like this take too much. Let's see what it'll sound like!

I agree about the cymbals.

Danke schön.

I reckon that all of this is pretty good.

My only worry is that through my system I can hear this boominess around 140hz, i.e. around the C# notes on the bass that feature throughout. Maybe just pull that down a bit. Towards the end, where the guitar instrumental bit is, the boominess is not so apparent, and it is like a cloud lifting off the whole sound.

I'd like to hear more snare drum, or maybe a little brighter of a snare sound so it'll stand out a bit more. Guitars sound awesome, nice and sludgy. Zzed is right, there's something about the low frequencies that isn't quite right. As an experiment, try to put a high pass on the guitars to give the bass a little more room to roam. Maybe around that 140 Hz mark that Zzed mentioned, or a bit higher. Then you can re-assess the bass EQ and volume. Bass in my room is still hard to judge, so my advice here isn't all that valuable, it's just an idea.

This is pretty damn sweet though. Nice performances on everything.

Thanks for the input.

I'm A/B-ing the bass with an EQ and there is indeed a boominess around 146Hz.
I'll get back later today with a newer version.

Hi Schwarzenyaeger - I haven't avoided commenting on this for any other reason than that I don't feel qualified to do so. I don't listen to this music and never have done, not even when it was new, which was before my time and I'm 52 years old. But it sounds meaty and well-played and recorded. Other than that I have no valid comments. :D

Thank you for the kind words none the less.

One of my favorite Sabbath songs. I would like it faster and heavier throughout, and crazier-sounding at the fast part. That's just me, though. Drums sounded kind of tepid. I know they're not real, but still. I know you love your new bass, but if you want to turn it up that loud, you need to come up with a better tone. Turn up the guitars. More distortion on guitars and bass. Your buddy should go up an octave.

And there you go! Good song choice.

The bass sounds more like Geeza on 13 than on the 1st few albums on which he played with fingers & flats. To me he didn't seem to have any real top end definition.
I've also thought he also used chorus or phaser or something but that seems unsupported by anything but my ears.

@NTB: I was definitely fighting the bass on this one. The next one will sound better, just for you.

@rayc: I did play it with my fingers, probably used a lot more twang than he does. I'm gonna look into that phaser business.

Thanks for the listens.

so far love all your Sabbath stuff...this is no exception. I have to agree with Bright on this one. This bass sounds either too loud or just not the right tone. It sounds great in some parts then you hear it cutting through everything else. However I heard a Sabbath song on the radio the other day and was amazed at how loud the bass was.

I think his vocals are good for this but no one is Ozzy :)

I love your mixes though and your guitar sounds are awesome.

Thanks!
I'm trying to give Geezer that spotlight in the songs that I think that Tony nabbed from him! Haha :D
I think the difference between now and then is that the bass actually has low end, it's not just mid range so when you turn it up, it becomes a bit thick.
Next one will be better balanced for sure.

Btw. I did a recording of Sweet Leaf, just needs a singer. I got the guy from Into the Void to do the cough at the beginning though, so he really got the best bit already!

Just reading about the bass - went back and listened to some of the original and your version back to back. I still think you captured the essence of the unique bass tone on that record. I hear a lot of mids and not much super low end on the original. I hear that with yours too, although if anything, I think you wound up with a dirtier tone actually. I just felt that you had it up a little too loud.

Like ray, I almost hear a slight wah/phasery sound on the original bass, but it's subtle and I think it's just a function of his set up and playing style at the time maybe?

If you cut any lo mids on the guitar, I think you could allow some of that back in. The tone is maybe just a little light? Just checking back in as it's a great tune and a nice cover.

Do not fight the bass. The bass is your best friend. Now... pick up your bass... and pray:

This is my bass. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My bass is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My bass, without me, is useless. Without my bass, I am useless. I must play my bass true. I must play better than that dickhead guitar player who does not respect me as a musician because I play the bass. I must outplay him before he outplays me. I will...My bass and I know that what counts in music is not the notes we play, the tone we produce, nor the foundation we provide. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit...My bass is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its strings, its body and its neck. I will keep my bass clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...Before God, I swear this creed. My bass and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!

You will give your bass a girl's name, because this is the only pussy you are going to get. May I suggest "Charlene".

That's right. I wanted to join the Marines when I saw Full Metal Jacket for the first time, just because I laughed my ass off for the first 45 minutes of that movie.

Judging by your username, you should have had no problem identifying with private Pyle. :laughings:

WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION, NUMB NUTS?

Nah, I was never socially awkward or fat. I christened myself NTB because of my propensity to make decisions that I know are short-sighted and will, in the end, prove to be bad choices. To my credit, I almost always know when I'm doing something stupid. I just have a hard time caring.
