I need a second hard drive for recording and was wondering what the advantages or dis advantages of each? Which ever I get it will be a Scsi drive 10K.
Also....
Does anyone have any info on the 15K scsi drives?

My specs:

Mac G4 466mhz
motu 2804
Tascam tmd1000 mixer

I think Seagate has some info:) Keep in mind that the 15k rpm can be quite noisy.

Why so set on SCSI? Are you too rich for your own good?

$$$$$

No not rich but have enough $$ for the scsi.

I really don't want to wish I had bought a scsi if I went with a ide drive, and found out later that it has draw back.

IDE is as good as SCSI for recording. There are about a gazillion threads here about IDE vs. SCSI. Search and ye shall find. SCSI is better when you have many small disc activities.

No need for external drives unless you need Terrabytes of storage. A midi tower will fit DVD, CD-RW and two HDDs, which should cover your needs. If you want more discs, get a big tower and an IDE controller card and you can fit four more discs in that case. Just make sure that you get a whopper PSU to power all those.

One advantage of the external is this. Say you and a buddy have a thing goin where he's got a computer set-up much like yours. Ya know same software, and computer, and shit. And, your constantly collaborating, Or he knows how to mix and you don't or something. You can just unplug the external and bring it to him. Or, if it's too noisy when your recording you can find an easy solution by putting something around, or over it. The disadvantage of external is, the space you consume. Not a very big deal unless your in a shoebox. The advantage of internal is the space you save. The disadvantage of internal is if you have to get to the drive, you have to dig into the computer. Not a good idea if you have shakey hands. I use an external 68pin UW SCSI, with an adaptec 2940 card 40Mbs. The disadvantage of that, is the conflicts that could arise with the card. I have been lucky. SCSI is the fastest, but not necessary anymore as you've heard. The current state of IDE works fine, but I think your stuck with internal there. Firewire is no faster than SCSI. The 400Mbs you see with firewire is a burst rate. USB is not fast enough. The choice between external and internal is yours. Just make sure you have atleast 7200 rpms. ;)

Thanks a bunch ola and TJ Hooker.

I am internal and externally gratefull!

You could also use a removeable drive bay. They are cheap and make it easy to swap from project to project.

Just a word of advice, bakup often if you use removable drives. A friend of mine had one of them drive bays and the connectors got worn, which resulted in a drive crash. Many months of work in the bin.

Great advice ola! Even with an external it's not a good idea to plug and unplug ALOT, but sometimes it must be done. Even if you don't use the removable drive, backup often anyway. Better to be safe than sorry.;)
