Hi there !
I was hesitating between the apogee duet 2, the focusrite saffire pro 40 and the motu audio express.

I need to be able to record with at least 2 condenser microphones. I do vocals and guitar micing ( electric and acoustic ) . Midi is also an advantage...but not necessary

So I wanna know which one has the better DAC, WC and Preamps.
Which one is the best quality wise.
Thanks !

If, for the price range ( 300 - 550 ) you have a better idea feel free.

I'm in a similar situation, looking for a quality interface. I *think* I've finally decided on the M-Audio fast track ultra 8r......u can get it for 400 shipped. It has very similar specs & abilities. I like the 2-headphone output. Anyway, I'm interested to see other responses.

I just spoke with an engineer that owns two of them.
He said that the focusrite is the better one, he thinks apogee isnt really that good for the price. The advantage of the motu was the good preamps and the hybrid thing ( firewire OR usb )

EIther way, he said that none of them can be compared to a RME baby face! But this one is kinda really pricy .. ( 750 in canada )

Apogee duet is my vote. They are known for there awesome pres and even awesome-er a/d/a converters. It will give you a spectacular sound!

I prefer the MOTU units out of those. The ability to use either USB or firewire is really cool, and I've had a lot of good luck with the drivers working well with my setup.

You also definitely want to look into driver compatibility with whatever setup you're recording on, whether it's a Mac or PC, and what software you're running... Check reviews on the products online to see if your setup sounds like it will work, or if you should expect problems. You'll probably get a better answer researching that way instead of just asking blindly which one people like on a forum... not that it's a bad thing, but you might find a better answer in my opinion.

Yeah I know, I asked the question to a guy that works/worked with the 3 units...
But different opinions are confusing. Since the babyface is '' that much '' better, but also much more costy. I think I will probably end up getting the motu audio express.

Anyone knows if I can bypass it to use it with more preamps and get a signal for each input/track to eventually upgrade for more xlr inputs, eventually to record drums ?

EDit : My set up is kinda really simple, I have 2 condenser microphones. One for vocal and one for acoustic guitar. I also have a sm57. Two of the three microphone could possibly go in the interface at the same time and into a Macbook pro 15'' with i7 quadcore. It has firewire or usb ports

Woah woah woah. Hold up with the M-audio. I currently own an m-audio purely because I don't have enough money to replace it.
When I got the M-audio I was chuffed, it seemed to work perfectly, looked great and it worked pretty well. After a few months you start to notice the pre-amps buzz like all hell and then a week out of warranty my first 2 preamps break. Constant buzzing no matter what it's set to, sent it in and 2 months of waiting for M-audio to ship the repair guy the parts I finally get it back, worked okay for 3 weeks. And literally 30 minutes ago the first pre-amp went again; nothing plugged into it, phantom power off. It died when I turned it on just like when the first 2 died. I really wouldn't suggest the m-audio and it might just be an isolated case but so far their support has been pretty rubbish.
