Interface for recording and live

Currently the only recording interface I have for my Macbook is a Line 6 Toneport. It is pretty well limited to Gearbox.

I need a more multi-purpose interface - one that can record midi and audio, as well as be suitable for playing my guitar live with a MINIMUM of latency. The Toneport falls short in this category - feels like a half second of delay with each note.

What are some good interfaces that will suit my purposes better?

Thirst of all someting must be wrong wit your toneport settings. Try looking at buffer size in Line 6 drivers. Usually the larency is negligible with this one, at least I don't ave any latency problems.

Basically thay all will do the job for you. If you are on a tight budget, Tascam may be a coice for you, unless you run Vista as an OS on your computer (lots of compatibility problems reported).

PreSonus gets credit for preamp together with M-Audio. If you have FireWire on your computer and enough money go for ProFire 610.

I personally like E-MU. Mainly for converters. Preamp sounds also nice to me. Would be nice to compare with M-audio and PreSonus some day. I'm not so concerned aboout the preamps as I don't do much of vocals recordings and record guitar direct. I thing if it comes serious vocal recordings you anyway have to buy high quality preamp and do some room treatment.

Digidesign is a must if you want to record with ProTools software.

Awesome, thanks for the list. There are so many options – just needed a little guidance.
I have read a lot of good things about the E-MU. Before spending any money though I will check out my Toneport settings next time I’m rocking :)
