Hi folks,
Just a quick couple of questions here: First off, I've been heavily considering getting a USB interface for my recording, but I need to know a couple of things before I decide which (or if) one I want. I'm looking at the Tascam US-428 because of the features to price ratio, especially used. I saw the Bheringer BCA000 ( http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--BEHBCA2000 ) for a nice price and I really like the motorized faders, which would be nice for reading automation.
Anyway, my questions are this: Would I be able to use this interface as a standalone soundcard, with monitoring of the tracks I've recorded as well as direct monitoring? I.E. will I be able to just plug my moniors into the interface output and use it as a soundcard as well, or will I need to upgrade my current soundcard (stock) as well?
Secondly, other than the obvious issue of pre-amp quality, is there any real quality differnce among inerfaces? e.g. coloration of sound? I'm heavily leaning towards the tascam... anyone have experience with this? I've read good reviews.
Now, the other subject (didn't want to make clutter with two threads): which prongs are hot, ground, etc. on an XLR cable? The reason I ask is because I've build the mic in another thread here (the birdfeeder/dinnerplate one) and am just wiring it up to an XLR connecter. I don't know which prong are hot, ground and signal... I have not found any really helpful information online despite looking but maybe someone can tell me if the following diagram is right?
Thank you all for your help in advance.
Edit: bah I just noticed that diagram is for balanced to unbalanced. So, obviously not.
Edit 2: I think i've found an answer to the wiring question; does this look right?
