I once heard an interview with Jack White about the White Stripes' new album and heard that he miked everything with dynamic vocal mics. I wanted to try this out so during a band practice, we miked the guitar amp with a cheap $20 Sony that is actually pretty good, the bass amp with a OLD Shure Unisphere B, bass drum with a Unisphere B, overhead on the ride/floor tom/crash - Shure SM58, and a new method of mine - strange old Realistic mic mounted on 2nd crash stand micing the crash, hihats, snare, and hi-tom. Then we recorded it. Surprisingly, the sound sounded really good, especially on the drums. This is a method worth trying out.

There is nothing about the sound on any White Stripes recording that I like...at all!

I can't understand the attraction to Jack White or that sound.

That's just me...

Hey... I understand that sound and the music behind it too.... But that discussion is for another day....

That's a cool experiment! Just so happens, I acquired a strange old Realistic mic dynamic recently.....Sahweet...

proboly because you dont like vintage sounds?

Time to get flamed, but I love the sound of all the White Stripes albums. Some of the songs are hit and miss, but I love the raw sound of their recordings.

I gotcha back...lol

I seem to lean towards their earlier stuff myself....There are a couple off the new one that hit the spot though....

It's like fingernails on a blackboard to me.

Doesn't even qualify as a "vintage" sound, bacause I can't think of any older music that sounded so unbalanced.

More like a garage band setting up a couple of microphones and recording direct into a cassette player. Not my thing! :p

I wouldn't flame you for liking it. If you do, that's cool with me, its just not my thing. I just love the sound of a big, well mic'd hi-fi kit.

I'm not really against lo-fi. I like The Strokes. I just don't get the White Stripes.

Like I said, that's just me...

If you like it, more power to you!
