Just curious if anyone has purchased the Mineral Wool Boards at insulationworld.com? they can be found here:

http://insulationworld.com/prodView.asp?idproduct=631

The boards are from owens corning, and at just $39 for a bundle of six it seems like a pretty good deal... just wondering what shipping will be like to Georgia... the boards are 8pcf...

anyway, if anyone has ordered or used some of these can you tell me a litte more about them? How effective are they? How much was shipping?

I remember checking out Insualtion World a while back. The shipping is pretty high, which is understandable due to the size/weight of the panels.

You would probably be better off calling around to find a local insulation distributor. A company called SPI (Specialty Products Incorporated) was recommended to me by members of this forum. I called SPI and got a quote but the shipping was still too high for me. They actually recommended that I buy from a local distributor and even gave me the names of all the local insulation distributors in my area that might carry mineral wool panels.

Here's THE thread to check out:

At the end of the summer, I ordered mineral wool from them. I ordered a carton of 1.5" thick and a carton of 2" thick.

Honestly, I haven't had time to test it out. That's actually been my goal this week. I ordered right before I left for the semester, and since the last two weeks have been holiday weeks, I haven't had time to set it all up.

Shipping was 80 dollars. But that was nothing I could avoid because there doesnt' seem to be any staight out dealers up here. Although, it may be far less since you're only, what, two states away?

But, I can attest to their good customer service.

Is mineral wool the same aas rigid fiberglall, or do you get the same results?

Well, gikacoustics is based in Atlanta, I think. They have to get their mineral wool from somewhere and still be able to sell traps at the price they do. I'd say you need to sniff out insulation dealers locally. There's an SPI location in Atlanta and and Owens-Corning in Fairburn. Take your pick. Driving across GA may cost you less than paying $80 in shipping, especially if you take a trailer and buy in bulk.

$80 is pretty high for shipping. I'm sure that I could ship a box of 3 pcs of 4" 8lb/cu ft 2'x4' for < $25 per box.

I agree! I was giving Diffusion options that he could use in a "pick it up yourself" scenario. In my case SPI in Lexington, KY sells 703 for 2.52/sf. SPI in Cincinatti sells it for 1.50/sf. I'd rather save up to buy 5-6 boxes and drive to Ohio in order to skip shipping charges and pay less for the product itself. It seems more economical to me that way.
