Hey guys, I'm a novice when it comes to full band recording and I was wondering if someone would be willing to critique this mix. I'm using Reaper by the way.

Thanks!

I am by no means an expert but for a novice this sounds pretty good. Interesting performance. Nice percussion, but the bass seems a bit hesitant at times - lagging a bit rather than driving the tune forward. It is all pretty subtle, which is cool, but I'd like to hear more melodic elements worked in there somewhere...

Mix-wise, in a very general sense, it seems pretty bass-heavy. There are some nice crispy highs at times, but very little in the way of upper mids. This is particularly evident in sections like the one beginning at 1:04 where it really sounds quite muffled.

The clarity seems pretty good, but at times there is a real lack of tonal balance...it seems to want to be bigger and brighter. I've never mixed a full band though, so I reserve the right to be completely wrong on all accounts. :p

Thanks for sharing.

Bingo. The bass is behind the drums. The drummer is playing on top of the beat and the bass player behind it. A little compromise on both ends and it will gel better.

What do you guys normally do to bring out transients? When I listen to mix I hear notes drop in volume every once in a while. I'm running the bass through a transient shaper and compressing it moderately as well as boosting some of the highs but nothing seems to improve the inconsistency of the attack. Any help would be appreciated!

Use a volume envelope to bring up the quiet bits.
