I was wondering if there was any way to get instrumental or background music to the songs I like, without going the karaoke route...I have also heard of software that is "supposed" to take out the vocals but have heard it only quiets them down...any ideas?

Do a Google search for "backing tracks." There are tons out there.

If I ever need a backing track, I either try to find one first (like on www.guitarbt.com) or Google, or find the Guitar Pro tab that includes all the instruments...drums, bass, etc.

Then I convert each track to MIDI and run it through Reason or EZDrummer then mix it in Reaper.

... I'll say this...

Impossible with a professional mix.

Karaoke machines and those types of software INVERT one channel of the stereo waveform.

Because main vocals are normally recorded in mono, there is a cancelation between the two waveforms (LEFT and RIGHT)

* The downside is that if the song has any mono information it will be reduced or removed.

THIS IS A GOOD THING TO DO (Flipping one side of the waveform) IF YOU WANT TO HEAR PRODUCTION ELEMENTS SUCH AS REVERB AND DELAYS ETC.

Try it out! :)

If you want the instrumental... you probably need access to the demos... or google TITLE INSTRUMENTAL.

background to playing

First ,get a Mac.Second, buy software called ,Band In A Box.Great Midi program.Write in the chords,and/or melody to a song after choosing a style.
Export it to GarageBand part of the ILife suite that comes with Mac.
Tweak the background you have created.Next grab your ax or open your mouth and sing into your mike with your marvelous backing behind you.
Edit creatively and record. Finally send to a record company and make tons of money.
