instrument definition& MIDI& Metroneme HELP

Ok, I got a Roland XP30, Audiophile soundcard, and Sonar. How do I load the patches from XP into Sonar. I downloaded the instrument definition for my XP and don't know what to do with it...
Second, the metroneme(?) clicks thru my speaker "once in awhile" Is there a MIDI problem with this?
3, how do I set up my XP so I can control it with MIDI in Sonar to play more than 1 MIDI track? Anyone?

I can't agree anymore with you, but, as you know, Roland's manuals are long and painful to read. I looked thru the manual quickly a few times and didn't find a specific answer to my question. It only said that, in order to play more than 1 patch with XP30, I would have to set it up in "perform" mode. So, that didn't really help.
And as for sonar, I have setup MIDI properly( i think) and still wouldn't do the right job....
So, please help out. Thanks
 
how do you import the patches from XP30 to Sonar after getting the instrument definition??? anyone?
 
You can't export the patches from the XP-30 to SONAR... - whether you have an instument definition file or not. The instrument definition file tells SONAR which MIDI messages to send for the XP-30 to respond -- bank select, patch select, controllers, etc. The patches are stored in memory on the Roland-- you can't just suck the sounds out and have SONAR play them on the soundcard.

Appreciate your replies, but....you don't need to shout out the answers in my face, I am only reading 10" away from my monitor :)
So, what are you suggesting? How can I set this up to make these 2 work together?

This stuff is clearly explained in the manual. I just don't think it's fair of you to seriously expect someone to write that stuff over again. (Maybe this is the reason almost nobody has responded to your thread.)

Granted, technical manuals are not a joy to read... but there are a series of tutorials. Did you go through those? They do a fairly good job of covering most of the fundamentals of SONAR. I don't have the manual here in front of me, or I would tell you the chapter and page numbers to read.

The tutorials are also in the Help system, as is most of the text in the manual.

First, it strikes me that maybe a few words about the differences between MIDI and audio might help here, because some of the things you said in your previous posts indicate that you might have some basic misconceptions going on there. Under the Introduction section, read the Computers, Sound, and Music section.

Next, read the Getting Started stuff, then follow the steps in tutorial #1 and #2. This should help clarify things. More detail is available under the Recording section.

If you are still unsuccessful, come back here with some more specific questions, and maybe someone here can help.
 
A1, I will try:
I have a Jv1010, dont know the XP30, lets assume they are similiar. Leave it in Performance mode.

In Sonar, get a midi channel ready, it should say "midi 1".

Double click to the right of "midi 1" between "midi 1" and M S R. It will open up a window called track properties. Hit the "instruments" button. If you have the definitions for the XP30, they should be there. Pick XP30 patch.

Then, select a channel (1). go to bank, and there should be choices there. Pick a patch, you are set.

Repeat the same with midi2, etc.

You dont really even need to touch your XP30, it is all done in Sonar track properties.

Yeah, Alchuk, it was in the help file, but I just didn't know what words to look up, but since DavidK mentioned, I finally found it.
 
Glad to be of assistance, the stuff is tricky. When I got Cakewalk Pro 9, I had to carry the manual around to learn it. Sonar is much easier, laid out well. Do you have the Metronome issues worked out?

I remember getting my Yamaha DX7, FB01 sound module, Qx21 sequencer, and yamaha Drum machine to finally work together back in the 80's. A1A2, you are in for some fun times coming up.

AlChuck, the problem is that you cant take the kitty to work, but anyone with a kitty is OK in my book.
I think the most disturbing video I have ever seen was of Jeffrey Dahmer, after killing 12 or so people. It was a home video of him visiting his parents at Thanksgiving, and he was sitting in a chair petting the family cat. The guy eats people, but he had the compassion to love the cat. What does this mean? It means I have way too much free time on my hands, perhaps I will get a puppy next.:rolleyes:
 
yeah, I have finally gotten the metronome to work, however, I have to set my XP in "preformance mode" to have sonar play the midi metronome. I just have to do a little more experiments with them to find out how everything works.
Yes, Alchuk, I am having a lot of fun with them now.
