Installing a soundcard

Hi, I'm in the throws of pruchasing a new home PC. As I do a lot of home recording I want to use it for this as well as other applications. I have found the PC I want A Dell Dimension 8300 running windows XP which I can get through work at around £400 cheaper than if I bought an audio PC from a specialist. To be honest I just want a pretty decent Home PC that I can use for Recording. I have alot of experience with Dell and like their machines. However the can't offer me anything decent in the way of sound cards the best is the creative 2 and that's not even the ZS, anyways I don't want this card. I want the m-audio 2496 as this seems a reasonably priced card and suits my needs. My question is how easy are these to install. From what I can gather you Install the drivers first and then plug the card into the back of the PC - Is that pretty much it.

I would be grateful for any advice of hearing from anyone hear who has done something similar.

Thanks
SCUD

Ps sorry if this is a bit of a novices question

"then plug the card into the back of the PC"

Are you talking about the USB version of the Audiophile? If so, then yes, first install the drivers, then plug it in.

Thanks for that

No I wasn't talking about the usb version. Are we syaing this is a pretty straight forwrd orperation then ?

It'a a pretty easy process.

You'll actually install the card first:
-You'll remove the case on the computer
-put the card into an empty PCI slot (the white slots, usually 3-6 of them in a single column, if there's not an empty slot remove one of the cards you won't be using, but chances are there will be an empty slot or two).
-put the case back on the computer
-fire up the PC
-Windows will say it found a new device, you can eiter install the drivers this way or with M-Audios installer- companies usually prefer you use their installer.

I'm not sure if M-Audio has an installer for their drivers (at least if you grab the latest one from their website, which you should do anyway).

-You download the zip file and unzip the files into a directory on your PC.
-Put the card in a slot
-When you boot up, Windows will tell you new hw is installed.
-Don't have it search for a driver, tell it you will tell it where to find it
-Browse to the directory where you saved the driver files
-Select the .inf file
-Viola!

I actually prefer this to a bloated installer.exe

Good luck!
