Inserts?

Okay, I think I got this down.

I want to be able to run 4 mic's into a mixer, then have direct out's into my Delta 44.
But do I need the direct outs, or will the Inserts work?

From what I understand, the Inserts will send and recieve audio. But if I just use a mono cable, will it work the same as a direct out?

Inserts will pull double duty as direct outs,...if,..as you say,....you use a mono cable.
Dont you have any buss outs? What kind of mixer is it?

Dont plug it in full..just for the first click so it well bypass the in signal of the insert.

Calwood - I don't have any mixer, I'm just looking. Preferably a Mackie, and probably the 1202VLZ Pro. The ones they have with the direct outs are much more expensive, and I don't need all those inpute either.
Now what are buss outs?

Another out...if you have a band set up playing live have each member a bus so you can control each of what they hear. If you have drums w/ whatever any toms and overheads you can make a stereo picture of them throun a bus to record. If anything I said is incorrect please tell me!! Their are people on here that can go into much more detail then me :)
 
Well man,...if you just want a small little mixer like the 1202 then what you were planning should work just fine.

Buss outs are just another way of getting sound out of your mixer to a certain destination. Basically the more outs you have ,..the more flexibilty it gives you,... in terms of routing.
I'm probably understating that,..because there are other more complicated applications for sub-groups. Most of which I'm sure i know nothing about.

But,..think about this though,....if you get a larger 4 buss mixer,...then,..the more channels you have to play with and the buss remains connected to your delta. With the mixer that youre getting,...if you,... add another instrument to your set-up or more vocs,..or what-ever,...then you will forever be plugging and un-plugging. But,.... say,..if you get a 24 channel 4 buss then you get your 4 ins set up,... connect your buss outs to your Delta,..then if want,...down the road you can add other instruments without ever touching those four channels.
Are you starting to see the flexibility here?

Anyway just a thought.

This is my plan:
1 bass mic, 1 snare mic, and 2 OH mic's. You know, typical setup. ;)
So I want all four mics to go into 4 separate mic inputs in the mixer, and I want 4 different outputs, one for each mic. That way, I record into Cakewalk/whatever, with each mic on it's own track.

I just wasn't sure if I needed direct outs, or if the "inserts" would suffice. And it seems that they would!

I think I'll just get the 1202 to get started, and upgrade later to something much better if I need more ins and outs.

How about the Yamaha MG12/4 Mixer?

I know I've asked about Yamaha mixers in here before, but this seems awesome!

6 mic inputs (4 more than the Mackie!), 4 Busses, inserts on 4 channels, and 12 total input channels.

I think I'll go with that one, and upgrade to a nicer Mackie in the future.

I've heard good things about the MG mixers. But,..i've never used one.
Well,..hold on,...I just read that page. hmmmmn,...what the heck does (stereo and group) mean??? I think that means there are 2 busses to a fader. Hmmmmmnnnn,..if thats true,..its not very flexible,..as to say,...its not really a traditional 4 buss. That might start to be nerve racking,..could create problems for ya,...but maybe not,...never used one like that before.
But hey,....its less expensive(plus)!!!! More channels(plus)!!!!! Still got the inserts(plus)! Looks like you got more positives than negatives here.
What I have heard about the MG series,..basically they are a step up from Behri,..but several steps down from a Mackie. But,..thats all relative man. I gotta Behri,...and I love it!!

Hey with the 150 bucks your saving you can get somethin' else! Masses of cables maybe???A mic -pre????

Here's another thought man,...

I'm not a drummer. I bought my very first kit,...6 or 7 months ago. I've played several before but this is the first one I've ever owned. I'm more into guitar than anyhting else!
But,....I started recording my kit with 2 mics. About a week later,...man,..I WANT MORE MICS ON MY KIT!!!!! So,..got 2 more,...Now I got a mic on every freakin' drum plus 2 overheads and I'm already wanting to add more room mics!
My point here is,...you are into drums,...apparently,...how long do you think you can record your kit with 4 mics? Not very long i'm bettin'. The more flexible you make your set-up,..the better off you are. Believe me thats a lesson I've learned the hard way.
Think what youre going to want down the road.

Yeah, I don't really know squat about busses now, and I'm not *too* concerned with lots of flexibility at the moment.
I just want to get started recording my drums!!

Originally I wasn't even going to use a mixer at all. But I realized I need 4 mic pre's, so I figured I'd get 2 DMP3's. But that's $400! I figured it'd be cheaper to buy a mixer.

Anyways, I think I'm going with that mixer to get things rolling. Besides, my guitarist has a Mackie DFX12, so I can use that when he comes over to do his tracks.

Just read your second post...

I'm not too concerned with adding tom mic's, because I don't have that kind of money, and I don't want to get in too deep.

I need to learn about EQ, compression, all that good stuff before I get too deep.

Plus, I'm only in High School working a couple days a week, so I'm not rolling in it. :D
 
Right now I'm recording my drums with 4 mics and man I wish had more money for more mics!!!!
