I've seen some questions on this thread whether built-in preamps on some sound cards (like the Aardvark Q10) can be bypassed so a different preamp can be used instead. From what I've read, the built-in preamps can't be completely bypassed, just the trim turned down, so the preamp is still active and can still color the sound of the mic.
What about using inserts as un-preamped inputs? As I understand it, the insert is between the preamp and the D/A converter in the signal chain, so it seems to me like this would work. The inserts probably won't be balanced, but that may not be a big deal unless there is a lot of electrical noise anyway. Does this seem workable?
