Inputs/Outputs in Converters

I'm looking at some converters such as the Apogee Rosetta....my question is that, why do the Rosetta, for example, have XLR inputs and outputs? Are those inputs or outputs necessary if I just connect the word clock out to my MOTU 828mkII's word clock in?

Those XLR inputs are for balanced cables, and are single -channel analog audio. There may be some that are AES/EBU which carry 2-channels of digital audio.

These are all different from the BNC wordclock cable. Wordclock does not carry any type of audio, it carries a sync stream.

I'd have to know more about the digital IO options in the Rosetta.

Do you really understand how this works? And why you are wanting to use it?

Well, I'm just curious to know. I'm not buying it. Since I'm still new into recording, I want to learn more, piece by piece.

I don't think the Rosetta has preamps. I think it's just conversion.
How I use my outboard AD convertors: 8 analog ins each (balanced XLR) and I take the ADAT out (8-channels lightpipe) and run that to my digital board. I have 16 channels of outboard AD I use this way.

One of the units has DA (digital->analog) so I use the ADAT out from my board into that unit.

So, to recap, all analog ins are balanced XLR. Adata is lightpipe. I don't use the AES/EBU connections. All these units do is convert from anaolog to digital and vice-versa.

Who ever gave me that neg rep regarding the Apogee, I said that I'm not buying an Apogee. I just referred to it for an example cause I was eager to know. If you're gonna stop me from learning, then fuck off.
