Hi, I'm new to all this home recording business and wanted to try and record some tracks via mic. I have a Sounblaster Live 1024 and pluged the plug into the pink socket. I try to record via cool edit, but somehow nothing seems to arrive. Does anybody know a freeware program which monitors the input of the line-in so I can find out if the problem is the old mic or the soundcard or whatever? thx

Make sure the record options are set up rigth in windows. Go to the mixer, select the record mixer. You can have only one record device, so pick the one that you plugged into. Then make sure the level is up.

Right click the speaker icon in the system tray-open volume controls-
options- adjust audio for record- check off all the volume controls you want to see- select microphone- make sure volume is turned up

do the same for playback-make sure wave is turned up also
