Hi,

What is the best way of setting the input level for a microphone when recording a track?
(Mic-> Mic preamp -> mixer input gain -> mixer fader -> recorder)

Best Regards,

Simon Edward

For sure you need to do mic -> mic preamp, and set the preamp gain to a good level for the mic. Don't ever touch it again.

What gear it is and how it's all connected matters too. For a mixer's direct out's, the fader doesn't affect that signal. If you're running a mixer's master out's to the recorder, it does. How's it all hooked up?

In any case, get the input level at the recorder and the recorder gain set at good levels, and don't change the level going to the recorder.
