Input level - basic set up

In reviewing the context of other posts, my question here is probably too basic to garner interest but it is driving me nuts. I have a very simple set up as it is my first attempt at even understanding recording. I know this is a no-no (from reading this site) but I have a condenser mic through a phatom power adapter plugged into the mic input jack of my laptop. I understand that the recording will sound bad but I can't even get it to record at a good volume. The input levels look fine on the console but during playback, my stereo, which normally is too loud at a volume of 30, needs to be at 45 or so to listen to the recording. It was suggested that I may need a pre-amp but I wanted a second opinion before getting one. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You definitely need a preamp, which you would then plug into the Line input (NOT the Mic input) on your laptop, or, better yet, it would plug into an interface geared towards recording.

You might also go into the mixer control of your laptop & push up the mic or preferable line inputs to get more bad signal.

Here is what the main problem is:
Finished CDs are much louder than mixes and individual tracks because of the mastering process. Comparing a single vocal track that is recorded at proper levels to a commercial CD is like comparing apples and oranges. Just turn up the volume. It doesn't hurt anything. In fact, 10 or 15 years ago CDs weren't anywhere near this loud...and they sounded better.
