Input at a decent level?

Even when I check my inputs as suggested in the cakewalk help (using the console view), my recording comes in incredibly low and requires a lot of normalizing to make it useable. Is there some way around this, or is this just the way it has to be?

What kind of soundcard are you using? I use a Darla24, which has it's own "Console" View, and I check that as well. I always found the meters in PA9 very inaccurate, Sonar is much better, and it is all one screen, so you do not have to pull up the console view, which always bugged me.

If you are using a Soundblaster, check the mixer and adjust input there.

How are you recording? You might need a preamplifier. If you're running a microphone into a line input, you'll have exactly the problem you describe.

When you check the Windows kernel mixer, make sure you check the "Record Control" level. NOT to mention the "Play control" level. They work different.

I think it must be a matter of pa 9's indicators being off. I guess i could just be bold, find what works, and risk a little distortion. i'm doing VERY rough cuts right now anyway.

In digital audio you don't risk distortion, you risk clipping (aka digital distortion). Analog distortion can sound good, clipping sounds bad.

However, you do need to be recording somewhere near the "edge." The idea is to get the recording as loud as you can, WITHOUT clipping. Experiment a little and don't solely rely on meters. Let your ears help you.

What is it that you're recording? Vocals can be tough because they tend to be uneven (particularly with untrained singers). An outboard compressor can help with this.

also, check to see if you are looking at your peak level or your RMS level in console view.

if your peak level is hitting -12db, but your RMS level is hitting at -24db your sound level will be low.

BTW, you didn't mention where your levels where hitting during recording.
