hi, i've written some songs and would love to get them on my website and eventually to cd. in all honesty i have no knowledge where to start. my aim is to have .mp3 on my webpage or maybe.wav. i can afford to spend upto £1000 on equipment if it gets the job done. i do have a 4track tape already which sounds ok, is there any chance someone could tell me what bit of kit i need to buy and the basics of converting that to .mp3. i have a microphone, guitars, leads etc already. if you need more information please let me know, and to whomever may read this many thanks in advance. i'll battle on as soon as i know where to start i promise!

...1rst of all, welcome to the board.

Lets make it simple...
You're gonna need a PC with average soundcard, and sound recorder/editor program. If you plan to do only to convert them to .mp3, then there's alot of free audio recorder / mp3 converter for download.

Then fire up your 4 tracks, hook it to line input of your sondcard, record to wave. Save the .wav then convert to .mp3. After all is done, then you can upload your .mp3 files into your site. I know it's sounds too easy, but you can post again here for more detail or if find any difficulties in any point. For now, get the PC first...

It depends on what level of functionality you need.

-If you just want to mixdown from your fourtrack to your PC (4tracks > 2tracks), then you don't need really multitracking software. An editor would suffice, such as SoundForge or WaveLab. You could set the editor to record, then hit play on your fourtrack, and mix it (mixdown). You would then be able to "master" the mixdown (edit, sweeten, noise reduction, eq, etc.) and save it as an mp3.

-If you want to user your 4track as mic preamps, and use your PC to record each instrument (2tracks > many many tracks), then you would want multitracking software such as Cubase, Cubasis, Cakewalk, Sonar etc. You could then record not on your 4 track (you're just using it to connect your mics to your sound card - limited to 2 channels, the stereo out on the 4track), but on your PC. This would give you much greater mixing control, as you would be mixing on your pc rather than on your 4track.

ooh gotta run more later

ok this is sounding good, have just spoken to a friend who will get cakewalk for me, do i need any specific leads? i have the equipment just not sure how to connect this up. btw my four track is a fostex-x12. i do apologise if all this seems really obvious.
many tx for reply too

connect the stereo out of your fostex to the line in of your soundcard and your all set.. All you really need for a poor quality recording is the windows sound recorder... but that doesnt really make the cut.

just a word of advice before you begin.... do a search of this site for the word addiction.

I started off with your setup, and now Im in the hole.

once again, tx, all the best for the new year,

just one thing though, where would i buy a cable to connect from my recorder to the pc? and what type do i need, i'll go out and buy one asap as soon as i know,

seems a really small connection in my pc

The line inputs and outputs on most basic PC sound cards are stereo mini (1/8" or 3.5mm, how ever you measure). You want a cable with the stereo mini on one side that breaks out into two mono 1/4" ends or two RCA's, what ever the output of your source is.
