I am not ready to fork over a wad of cash yet (... just finishing lyrics and arranging, etc.) but I am looking for a cheap way to get an XLR cord into the computer, two xlr inputs even better. No dollar maxium per se, just cheaper-is-better. Any advice accepted, but please, no flamming/opinion-bashing (i.e. if you can't share your infinite wisdom with tact, keep it!). Thanks a bunch!

If you just want to get started, then spend $50 on a Behringer UB802. Then run the tape out rca jacks from the mixer to your existing sound card's 1/8" line-in stereo jack.

Delta 1010 LT $199. Thats all I can think of

I second the 1010LT. It has 8 inputs with two of them XLR with mic pre's. Not super hi-fi mind you but for getting started they'll do nicely. It also comes bundled with a simple but useable recording/mixing application as a bonus. The thing with this card, it's got midi, spidf and a bunch of inputs and outputs. The price is great for this much equipment.

And no...I don't work for the company and have not affiliations or ties with them...I simply own a couple of the cards myself and think they're the cat's meow.

There's other stuff out there some better some worse but I lucked out in that I didn't have to try a bunch before I found something that worked for me.

Oh...the one thing the XLR inputs won't have is phantom power so, if the mics you're planning to use need it, you'll need to pick up a phantom power supply...they're pretty cheap to come by.

the 1010LT is actually a great soundcard to get started, and also you will be able to use it when you advance in ur expanding knowledge of musical recordings. its inexpensive at $200 and like i said, you get multiple inputs and outputs for when u decide instead of 2 inputs, i want 4. from what it seems, it sounds like ull be recording vocals and an acoustic guitar (if thats what u need 2 inputs for). this will be able to get that done and also for later on ull be able to add a decent mixer and get even more out of ur audio interface.

i would highly recommend that, but if u REALLY want the cheapest setup, get a $50 behringer ub802 and then get a cheap soundcard with a mic/line input. for a soundcard, u can also get a audiophile 2496 and get the midi, spdif, and stereo input + output (a great beginners card). i own and use both of these cards and love them both.

Emu's 1820 card would give you the 1/4 balanced inputs, two of them at 24 bit. 192khz. That is clean!

Yes it does look like that is what the 1820 sells for. But, that is pretty cheap for 24 bit 192khz. My MOTU 828 does 24bit, but only 96khz and cost $700.00. The MOTU 896 which does 192khz and 24bit is $1000.

If you're passing out CDs of your music, you don't need anything better than 24 bit/44.1 kHz.
