Hello,
Looking for something small and quiet to put in my chain between the soundcard and my new monitors so I can hook some headphones up at the same time. I read that a cheap Behringer would be an inexpensive and relatively quiet way to go.

Also, I'm assuming this is the best method to achieve these results, but I may have misinterpreted the posts I read. Any help would be great.
Thanks!

Just started noticing that by chance when doing a search in the Drum forum. Thanks very much, will go check one out.

The Yamaha rocks! Rimshot, my sometimes drummer, owns one, uses it every day and swears by it.-Richie

Heard good things about the yammie MGs.

The Tapco 6306 and Soundcraft Compact four are probably worth a look as well.

I've got an old Tascam Portastudio MKIII or something like that sitting around. It's pretty noisy from what I remember though... how much better would something like one of the Yamaha MG units be? I put an order in for one at a local store but could easily cancel it.

Do you realy need the mixer functions, or just headphone amplification? What about just a headphone amp? The behringer ha4700 is cheap($100.00) and sounds very good. It has a pass-through that you could run to your monitors.
This way, you could use up to 4 pairs of phones if you wanted to.

The Behringer UB series is nice for the money. The UB1632fx, A 12 channel with stereo channels can be bought new for around $250. Quite as a mouse. Loved mine, till I upgraded to the UB2442fx Pro for the direct outs.

I don't really need the mixer functions, but for the price I figured I may as well have a little to work with. I can't really see myself needing 4 sets of cans in the near future as it's just me and my trusty acoustic w/ some vox, and a little harmonica.

If there's an even cheaper alternative (than the $150 Canadian for the Yamaha unit) that would be preferable... after all, poor students such as myself would prefer to cut corners where they can be cut.

Oh yes, I did, sorry I forgot to mention it. I'm going to take a look at a couple of stores around here on the weekend and see if they've got one. Thanks!

Do what I did and get a mixer and a headphone amp. Most mixers have some sort of hp amp, but they usually aren't very good and clip at high volume. For about $160 you can get the $99 yamaha MG4 and $60 or so you could get a used headphone amp on ebay. You don't think you need it, but if you continue recording you will quickly see the benefits of having a dedicated HP amp and a decent mixer. BTW the Yamaha mixers have some pretty damn good preamps, my father has a yamaha and I spent wy more on my Mackie, but the sound quality is about the same.

I would save money and just buy a dedicated headphone amp; but if you decide you want a cheap small mixer, check out to Folio Notepads. I bought one and am satisfied with the results. Mine has only 4 mono channels and 2 stereo channels, but it also has effects send/returns, tape out, mix thru etc w/ 1/4" and XLR inputs. The sound quality might not be as good as you want but you said cheap.

If you want to run 4 headphones, a mixer is not going to do that. You need a headphone amp. Check out the Behringer PowerPlay Pro. Its a rack mount headphone amp with 4 channels and a crap load of ins and outs. It's about $100 and I thinks much better deal than the Samson (which in NOT a full size rackmount). Also, Behringer makes small 4 channel mixers for around $100.

I think we're getting a bit hung up on headphone outs here.

No kidding? Damn, well that's what I ordered. I guess I had better cancel that order because that is exactly what I wanted to do. Thanks for the heads up!
