inexpensive active monitors

I'm looking for inexpensive speaker monitors for my computer. I will be using cakewalk & recording mostly by myself. I'm assuming the more I pay the better equiptment I'm going to get but I really don't think I need too much power. I would like something better than regular computer speakers but don't want to pay more than $250-$300 for a pair. Any suggestions?

I have seen the Audix PH 5-VS for $200 for a pair. They are 50 watts, 25 each. Does anyone have an opinion about these?

There are volumes about monitors/speakers on this site. However, for a quick inexpensive suggestion:

YORKVILLE

You can get Yorkville on the net and find out the nearest dealer. You can get the very reasonable passives. Or, you can spend more and go for the actives. I have not heard a pair of the actives; however, if they are as good as the passives, they are good.

The price for actives should still be in your range if that's what you want.

I've also been meaning to post a question about these monitors. I haven't heard them yet but Event makes some good monitors (IMHO) and at that price they're kind of hard not to notice. Anybody have any comments on these?
 
In your price range, I've had pretty good results with a pair of M Audio SP5B's. Very good in a small room. They work better with a wall behind them to reflect sound from the bass ports.-Richie
 
I recently tested out a pair of the Audix PH5VS speakers while trying to make the same decision. They sound really good, but they have a hyped midrange (if you do enough digging you'll find that Audix advertises this fact), and that made me decide to go ahead and get a set of Event 20/20 unpowered monitors ($300) since I've got a serviceable amp.

The SP-5B and the new Event TR5 sounded almost identical to me, with a very flat midrange. The low end is a bit weak, but I almost went for the SP-5B's.

Now I just have to get my control room finished so I can see what my purchase is going to do for me.

Yo all:

Just talked to my local Yorkville vender. He called to say hello and see if I needed anything.

I asked about the active Yorkvilles and he said he could get me a pair for about 215.00 each. This is the lowest price I've been quoted.

If anyone wants the vendor's number, let me know and I'll send it to you. However, since I'm local, as is the vendor, I don't have much to pay for original shipping. Thus, the price might be more depending where you live.

i have seen them on a few internet sites for 425-430 for the pair... same price.. so haggle with your dealers!!! they should match it!
 
Watch out for price for the pair -vs- price each.

Yorkville's prices are each while m-audio's are for the pair...

I got the unpowered version of the yorkville YSM-1i with an art amp(well the amp is on the way) and I'm thinking of picking up a pair of powered M-Audio speakers($500 CND a pair, -vs- $200 CND each for the YSM-1i + $300 CND for the amp AMP) . I want the m-audio speakers to use a rears in a 5.1 system and to use for a bookshelf system in my apartment when I'm at collage.
 
I got the Yorkville powered YSM1P's for $450 a pair from the local dealer. They had to ship them from Toronto so I had to wait a while for them. But it was worth the wait. They sound great.
 
I just installed a pair of Event TR5s; I have nothing to compare them to, but they are pretty impressive to my ears. Very clear, "precise" sound. So far I've only heard mastered work, but they did a nice job with Loreena McKinnett's Book of Secrets, a pretty fine, complex album. I heard things in one of Robert Shaw's choral recordings that I had never heard before. They each seem to be pumping in the 100 watt range. I'm really happy with them so far.
