Hello again,

If anyone wants to try to help with this one that would be cool. Unlike the last number, it is faster and the mix is not nearly so dark. Maybe too far in the other direction? I think it's kind of almost pop...sort of? I tried to take some of the comments on the last track into consideration (when applicable) while doing this one.

The drums aren't quite so roomy as the last few tracks, but still more than many of you might like. The OHs are probably too loud, right? I turn them down to tame the crashes and the snare sound becomes dull. This was the best compromise I got so far. I can live with this mix, but I have a whole laundry list of relatively minor tweaks. I wanted to see what people thought before I even tried any of those things in case I'm missing stuff.

Give it a listen and let me know what you're hearing if you can. Thanks as always - Pete :D

Hi heat...

I do love all the little weirdy bits you do at breakdowns. Another good one.

Nothing from me mixwise... it's early here and I can only really listen on phones without annoying the neighbours, but it all sounds pretty nice in the cans.

Nice tune as always - the unique nature of your voice is always a pleasant change to the oversung anodyne crap I hear around the traps sometimes. It's refreshing, if that's not to dumb a word to use. Really like the ending too, and the little details right at the end... rattle of tambourine, buzz of amp etc. all of which I know you've purposely left there.

I didn't love the guitar solo, I'd have to say, bit over trembly for mine, but that's just a personal thing. It works.

Good stuff as always - I'm envious of your output - and I must finish this song I'm doing in the next week. I must, I must.... :D

Thank you sir. Yeah, "unique" is probably being kind, so thank you for that :). The vocal levels are higher than I've done in the past as I've gotten lots of feedback lately that they were too buried. I may have gone too far...

So, by "trembly", do you mean it sounds like my hands are trembling, or is it more the tone? I think the levels is a little high there in the middle, but I'm happier with it at the end. I kind of go for squawky, thinner tones lately, but I'll be curious to see if others are put off by it. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. Cheers.

No, I think the vocals are about right, level wise... and I think weboth wonder how anyone could possibly like our singing sometimes, but, you know, they do.. I like yours because it doesn't sound like anyone else's, and has that slightly shopworn, experienced-with-life, sort of vibe to it. And it's not overly high either. There are a few other people here who don't sound like anyone else and I like them too.

Trembly was more a reference to amount of vibrato, rather than tone... it was a bit more than I would have done, but like I said that's just a personal taste thing and a fleeting thought. Ignore it.

I don't really listen to your tunes to give you mix feedback anyway, I think you're well past the point where I could give you any meaningful feedback, I don't think I have the ears. I'll leave that to the Gregs and the Triple Ms...no, I listen to your songs because I like them..:D

Hey heat,
This one is cracking ,,,that's good:-)
I'm on holiday in Tenerife,,what do you need help with,,
It sounds great as always, I can even hear the tambo,,
The gtr solo has a like tape flutter,,, nothing wrong with it, but is that what you intended,
I think that's what Armistice meant,
Still loving the work you do.
Jiff in the sun!

Armistice - Thanks again man. That's all really very nice of you to say. Tough enough to be objective about your own music, but perhaps even more so about one's own voice. Much more a source of nervousness or whatever than playing an instrument...more personal or something. Anyway, your encouragement is much appreciated. Listening to your mixes I'm sure you have the ears to pick out stuff I might miss. So feel free in the future if you hear anything amiss.

Kind of freaking out about the vibrato now :p after your comments and now jiff's below :D!

lol @ cracking. I had to google Tenerife - it looks pretty amazing. Hope you have a great time.

Ok, I listened to the solo in the middle again just now. I do hear at the end of a few runs I hold the last note and really do waver it pretty drastically. I guess that's just my schtick or something? I wasn't really even aware I was doing it. I guess the amount of vibrato used is more of a taste thing?

Funny you mention tape flutter, as I did use some cassettes on this one, but only for the strange middle section (break?). Thanks for you input dood!

sounds goot heat. the drums sound great but why the 180º pann on the cymbals.
very catchy tune. i like the ahh ahs.

Great job, as usual. I really like this tune it takes me back to an earlier time in rock/pop music. This song has real character. I don't have anything about the mix to comment on as I don't have enough experience to make any kind of meaningful or helpful comment.

Yeh I really like you voice as well. For all the same reasons as Armistace, it's unique.

Hey cool tune man, quite boppy/poppy, but I really like it. Reminded me a bit of Luna, which I haven't really heard in your music before. Dean Wareham, from Galaxie 500, you know him/them?

I was a bit unsure about the tight lyrics at first, but having had a few listens I think it works really well, and I 100% embrace it now. It actually gives the song a lot of character. Very good on squeezing it in, I find it hard to get that kind of syncopation...I think that's what it's called.

I dig all the twangy/poppy sounds before the guitar solo too. How'd you do dat then?

Really like the crashes.

Love the lyrics too, I can relate. :D Or I should say

I basically won't ever think of anything bad to say about your sounds, dig 'em so much.

It's good.
Your voice is fine.
Just curious, have you ever listened to Jazz Butcher?

Guitar that comes in at 0.33: bring it up. And at 1.47 ditto.

I know you don't want to hear this, but that guitar solo that came after the interlude could have developed way more - that part is more uplifting than the outro, even.

I was trying to think of a comparison regarding the potentially crowded lyric/melody and the world worn weariness of the delivery - SQUEEZE is my though - not Cool For Cats though but stuff like Up the Junction & almost anything on East Side Story.
I liked it.
The solo - sorry it's neither here nor there but it is on there so it works but doesn't grab and shake.

rayc can't believe you didn't mention Ray D. The verses sound really Kinky to me, and a couple of the guitar lines remind me of 1965 era beatles, which is never bad. Love this - so right up my alley. I love the big drums, and ESPECIALLY the overhead sound and the cymbal crashes. This is so damn hooky and poppy in a super cool way. I gotta share this with some of my power pop buddies. Great job man. Sounds really good on soundcloud, so I imagine the hi res is smoking...

Thanks Manslick. I think the guitars are more in tune with each other this time around ;). I didn't do anything different with the panning on the drums this time...they OHs and room mics are panned hard L/R as always. It does sound very spread out though, especially when those crashes come in. Maybe I should bring them in a little?

Great job, as usual. I really like this tune it takes me back to an earlier time in rock/pop music. This song has real character. I don't have anything about the mix to comment on as I don't have enough experience to make any kind of meaningful or helpful comment.

Awesome. Thanks man. I will be on the lookout for your track say 3 months from now :D.

I think we all like getting input here, regardless of the poster's perceived level of experience. It's up to the OP to decide what, if anything, to do with the feedback anyway. I guess this does sound kind of retro...that wasn't my intention going in, but I hear that now and am fine with it. Thanks again.

Hey girl, thanks a lot. I have never heard of those folks you mention. Scanning ahead, there are a bunch of references being thrown out there, and just about all of them are unfamiliar to me. Cool. I have some googling to do! I see you have a new track. I'm off to visit Dad, but look forward to checking it out later .

Yes, the verses have a strange meter and the chorus is just kind of rapid fire, and it's weird, but I think I got it to fit somehow, sort of...;)

I'm glad you asked about the break. I love talking about that stuff! That section was the first thing I recorded, it's probably my favorite part of the song and really all the rest of it came about merely as an excuse to showcase those weird sounds.

I took cassette tapes of songs I recorded 5 years ago and transferred the organ tracks to digital while playing with the pitch knob on the tape deck to get it to speed up and slow down. I also transferred some of the tracks in reverse. Then I cut pieces of those tracks in random length - backwards and forwards, and pasted them on to 4 separate tracks and panned the 4 tracks all around. The organ bits were all mostly holding the same note. The twangy thing is a mini toy guitar that I de-tuned so loose that the strings just barely produced a note and I tried to bend something close to "C" and just played that little 2-note riff over and over. Thanks again for listening and giving me an excuse to explain that!

It's good.
Your voice is fine.

Cool. Thanks Sam! I have never heard of Jazz Butcher. Adding that to my search list for later. :D

I hiked that guitar part pretty high already, but I would be happy to give it a couple more dbs - thanks.

Yeah, the solo is getting no love. There's some consensus on that anyway. I'm not sure what else to do there? I guess it was pretty safe and a little boring. I did that before figuring out the vocal melody and that actually kind of inspired the verse lines, but that doesn't mean I have to leave it there. I like that part, but it does kind of feel like a bit of a let down maybe after it builds up to it...good stuff as always dobro. Thanks.

I listened to your track a few times last night and was digging it. I need to listen again with a clearer head before commenting though :drunk:.

Wow. I haven't heard squeeze mentioned in quite a while. Not sure that I ever cared for them so much, but I'm going to look up some of the stuff you mention as I know they've done a lot more than I've heard. Another solo concern...thanks. You're not alone there, so perhaps I'll revisit that section. Thanks ray!

Ok, I have heard of the Kinks! I'm glad you got to check this out chuck. I really didn't know what I was going for when I tracked this, and when I was done, I was kind of thrown by what I'd come up with stylistically, but I actually thought to myself, "hey, this kind of sounds a little like something chuck would've done", and then I felt better about it :D.

And a little WORLD PARTY thrown in. A+ man

I feel like I should know what World Party is, but nope...nothing. Adding to my list...it's going to be an educational Father's Day! Thanks.

Wow. Here I am listening on the crappiest of half-blown out laptop speakers and I'm still impressed.
You consistently write great tunes and this is no exception. In fact, it might be a shining example. I love the chorus.
It's one of the catchiest bits I've heard in a long time. Good job!
