Hi folks,

I have a rookie question....

(and I'm not sure I even have the right vocabulary ... yet :) )

I'm recording through a Behringer 1202. Both mic and guitar to the Behringer and then to PC line-in. I am using Magix Studio and Audacity as software mixers.

When I record the first track, lets say a guitar rhythm, all is well. However, when I record a second track, a bass perhaps, the first track is copied into the second track. It's more like dubbing than recording an indiviual instrument track.

How do I keep tracks seperate so that I can mix them down?

Thanks,

Ambrose

It's probably got something to do with the settings within your software. I'm not familiar with what you're using, but check your original tracks output assignments perhaps.

It sounds like during your second track recording, the first is being played back...is the output of your card going to the mixer as well? I suspect what you're doing is laying down the first track...listening to it while recording the second which is the norm but, you need to make sure that your audio card out doesn't find a path back into your recording circuit. If you're not sending the playback to the mixer, then somehow your recording software or PC audio card is making the cross over for you.

I'm not familiar with any of your gear but I hope this helps.

Thanks folks.

That was exactly the problem, Punkin. I had run a speaker out from the PC to RCA in's on the Behringer! When I went straight headphones from speaker out, it worked perfectly. Basically bypassing the Behringer mixing board for playback. Very cool!

Thank you very much.

If you are having any trouble with latency on Audacity, just lower your playback output volume. This will usually clear it right up. You didn't mention it, I just thought I'd let you in on it just in case you encounter that pesky problem.

Glad we could help. I'm not intimately familiar with your mixer but many lower end mixers won't let you record in and playback out at the same time while leaving the signals seperate. Monitoring while recording can be tricky using a DAW as Dani is leading to. Some sound cards and applications can accomodate this but then you get into latency issues (delays) which means you're going to have a pretty powerfull computer with a quality sound card. There are a bunch of threads on this...do a search for latency. It's totally doable but you've got to get things set up properly.

Good luck.
