I've abandoned my folkie roots for the moment and decided to rock out (which is hard to do at my age...) - sort of Big Star/Who/Swervedriver induced. I've listened to the mix on a couple of sets of speakers but any comments would be appreciated.

I've had a hard time getting the EQ right on my songs... it tends to either boom or become trebly unless the monitor is EQ'd flat... do other people have this problem? Somehow professional mixes seem much more "forgiving" of EQ variations on the monitor system.

Song: North Star

Very trebbly on h/phones.
The ride/HHat/crash combo in 1 speaker in the intro & at various stages is very toppy/fake/annoying.
the reverse git is good, the song so8unds like it
'd be good. the bass has lots of definition not bottom end from the bass drum though.
Your vocal sounds like Ian Anderson - a power pop tull?

I like it! The drums don't sound too good though. The patterns are fine, but it's the sound / mix. The comment about Ian Anderson is right on. I hear a little Andy Partridge too. It's almost as though the Dukes of Stratosphear recorded a 3rd EP.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll rework the EQ and pan on the drums. As far as Ian Anderson... I guess I have a hard enough time singing on key so I don't worry about who I end up sounding like!

Yeah, the balance isn't all that bad, but I agree that the drums sound really bad. Very "midi" sounding. I think you just need better samples, or even better...try using loops maybe? I've heard people get really good results with loops, mostly because the loops were played by a real human at some point.

Song's cool...just humanize it a bit on the drum front. Good luck.
