I'm starting a musical project. I have a website up and of course a myspace/soundclick/etc... I'm almost done with the first album, but I'm interested in ways to get it out there.

I'm not looking to earn money, the albums will be freely downloadable as well as physical copies for ridiculously cheap. But I would like to have a good amount of people give my music a chance.

Are there any good sites or forums dedicated to independent artist? I've been Googling around but I figured I'd ask here as well.

Thanks

hrmm I'm kinda in the same boat..

well i guess the first most obvious thing is to play as many shows as you can and don't just show up and play.. talk to people.. get to know your audience. Gain a connection with them.

on a less personal note when you add friends to myspace or whatever, talk to people.. don't be one of those bands that send out generic thanks for the add notes..

As far as actual marketing for the band/cd there's lots you can do.

Are you at all known yet?

Make posters with your name on them and flyer your city like crazy. Make smaller flyers and leave them on the bus. Get your name out there. This is kinda were I am with my band right now.. we're about to release our first real album.. We actually decided to change our name from poorly drawn birds to rabbit transit. I created a logo and now i'm in the process of printing a few hundred flyers.. I'm going to post them EVERYWHERE (particularly at bus stops hence rabbit transit) all it will be is the logo without our name on it.. The idea is to get people wondering what the heck is this thing. Then when I get to phase 2 to I"ll associate the name with the logo and the band.. the idea is this will create enough hype to hopefully pack the venue at our cd release (from there it's up to our playing to determine who likes us)

I personally find teaser campaigns like this really obnoxious, but that's somewhat due to an occasion when three or four groups on my campus simultaneously decided to blanket every advertising surface available with teaser ads. You'll have to be careful that your campaign piques interest as opposed to just annoying people.

I'd say Shows help the most. You could make the most amazing music on earth, but if you don't play shows and actually preform in public, no one really cares. I've done a handful of projects, and this is what happened. I had a project that had a show 4 days after being created. We didn't even have more than 3 songs and everyone had heard about us. Then, another one of my projects had a full album recorded, had been advertized like crazy, but dismembered before playing a show, and only a handful of people know about the band.

So lesson learned Public apperances make it happen.

id say depends who your looking to market to or get the attention of...if your marketing online..juss give a&r's a product that looks professional. invest in a professional layout...maybe a photoshoot. when it comes down to it its gone be about the music but to reel people in you want to look like u can sell or look like you have something to offer them. appearance goes a far way!! like i said it will be about ur music in the attend but be an attention grabber. trust me

Play shows, hand out flyers, have your friends spread around the word, street perform.

Google and/or Facebook Davide Di Saro. He has his own Toronto-based animation studio and record label. He seems to be especially interested in getting 1-man bands heard.
