An engineer who also tunes the drums. That is the producer/engineer equivalent of the courtesy reach-around! :D :D :D Dude, you're the real deal. I'll be reading your equivalent of the mixerman diaries in the next 5-10 years.

In this case, he should have said "compromised by" instead of "compromised of"
Yeah, about that...ummmmm.... You need to insert the word "by" for "of." But are you SURE that's what he meant?

lol (this is a glorified excuse for a bump, but I DO really REALLY think that line needs to change somehow).

If I were you, I'd totally ignore me.

"this isn't a mix, just a board mix of tracks" should I laugh or should I give it up? f**k dude, that's a fu**********ckin cool song man!! great tune I love it!!
I need to hear the final!

Hahahaha... It's always fun for me to read somebody else who feels as humbled as I do. I take it you haven't heard any of his mixes before? LOL. I feel your pain.

This is gonna be a long reply...I can tell...(honestly written as the first sentance of this post.)

Jamal: Thanks so much. I was definitely not limited to only mixing this (actually, it's just a board mix...not mixed at all!) I got the guitar tones (tweaked the amp and guitar), tuned the drums, helped with the arrangement, recorded all of it, and then did some compression and EQ so I could have a board mix to post!Darth

wow that made me feel even worse.....lmao....damnit...is this what you do for a living...did i miss the "darth" story somehow???

Darth, this is excellent sounding. You get a great,non-squashed sound. Not really my type of music,a little too commercial for me ,like Blink meets Spin Doctors,or something.BOARD MIX???Damn, sounds ready for the radio to me.I...I...got...I got nothin'...
Totally cool!

OH NO!!!It's already stuck in my HEAD!!!!
...I know she knows...

You guys make me get kinda pumped about really mixing this tune...damn I gotta find time!

Darth

wow, this is "rough"..........man, i wish i could produce my best stuff half as good as this. i can't wait to hear what "finished" is!!!!! catchy tune, i have to listen to something else before it gets stuck in my head

good work

nice work

i think my favorite thing about this song is the hook/loop on the outro....its something you would THINK more songs would do...but, usually even if they only sing the hook - the still repeat the whole musical progression in between...that's cool.

It almost sounds like a broken record, good stuff.

As for the mixes...nice..

man, you really upped the anti on gear since your Creed You Suck days didn't you? I don't remember the Aphex stuff, or the U87...I was thinking you used to use a Roland DAW or something?

I'll have to look into the Aphex pre more...I was thinking about buying an RNP or something in that price range, this looks nice as well.

Fabulous, you are how old, 23 or so right? You're going to be huge, I agree with Chess.

My big question is *where* was it recorded?

Hey man, Boston's first album was recorded in the singer's basement. This is a similar type of "home recording." LOL.

You've got some serious shit in your basement.

:D

well, i know it's a home recording..

i was just wondering if it was a typical bedroom...maybe they set up in a nice living room....who knows.

I'm sorry man... I just figured you were yelling at Darth for posting here. I see now you were asking an actual question. I'm a dumbass...you should KNOW that by now. LMAO. :D :D :D

Wasnt it an 8-Track Reel to Reel?Tom Sholtz is a genius.

Wes, the only new gear that I have now is the Aphex 207, a rented U87, and all of the THINKING that I've done about recording in the past 4-5 months! I do love the Aphex 207, and our course I love the U87!

It was recorded in the room right next to my bedroom. It's about the size of an ordinary bedroom, but it's shaped like an "L", and it has a slanted ceiling.

I'm still using the Roland 2480 DAW, and yes, I'm 23 years old. I turn 24 in Februrary!

I tracked 2 songs for FW yesterday and today, so I'll have those mixes up soon. Can't wait to actually mix the song that's at the top of this post, and then get on to the FW stuff.

BUSY BOY!

Thanks again for your time...

schhwweeet!-Nicely done so far-great guitar and vocal sounds-drums sounded kinda funny to me-maybe it was the snare-it didnt seem very defined-or it didnt sound real-something like that...Anyway-I'm sure by the time its completed it will sound great.

This is F***ING BULLSH*T !!!!!!

No one should be allowed to post something this SWEET on this board. I'm not sure if it took the wind out of me or inspired me. Please tell me this is a con and it was done professionally.

This is obviously highly compressed ...... AND I'M LOVING IT !!! I know a lot of people on this board frown on excess compression , but I can't help liking it. I always have to hold myself back on my mixes.

Did I read correctly - no chorus/delay/fattening on the vocal other than compression and EQ? I swear I hear I very slight chorus on the singer's voice.

I've got no complaints and any suggestions would be personal preference.

REALLY ENJOYED IT.

DON'T EVER POST AGAIN (ha !!)

Sounds fantastic! I don't care for the snare sound but that's preference.

this mix is incredible.
i do have some somewhat possibly constructive comments:

- snare sound has way too much wire for my tastes, and not nearly enough "bang". if you used a top+bottom mic (as i suspect), i would use more of the top and less of the bottom.
- kick sounds pretty muddy. give 'er some more of that 4k goodness.
- the cymbals sound pretty sloshy and maybe a bit too present. i would probably do a cut around 5-7k.

- bass is nearly perfect. i would maybe prefer a bit more mid-highs to define the beat it's playing, but that's just personal preference. i would also turn up its overall volume just a tad.

- guitars sound like they could take up a bit more space in the mix than they currently are. with that cut in the cymbal EQ as i suggested, i would guess that would make some room in the top end for them, but they also need some more "oomph". maybe 700-800Hz? just a guess.

all in all though, these are just minor suggestions, and certainly not complaints... this mix is very pleasant to listen to, and the song is right up my alley. i can't wait to hear the final thing. good luck!

also, after listening to it a few more times (can't stop... heh) i now think that the backup vocals could come up quite a bit and could use some EQ. i'm hearing a lot of their sibilance but practically nothing of the notes they're singing, which is the most important part of backup vocals.

again, awesome job with this.

okay, just one last post... i promise :)

if you're looking for a good reference mix for this kind of music, i would suggest doing a search for "Wasting My Time" by the band Default.
I'm not into the band at all, but the mix is absolutely incredible. The best I've ever heard for the general Alternative genre.

the one thing that stands out to me about their mix vs. yours is that the drums are way, way tighter sounding on theirs - mostly due to a lack of "thwack" in both your snare and kick.
