Man, I'm about 3 inches away from flaming you for even posting this in here...LOL. FUCK YOU!!!!

It's great. A BOARD MIX???? WOW. I really really hate you, but not really.

Who's the Band? I love the song.

Dude, I know you're sincerely looking for feedback, and I'm sincerely trying, but this is just so far ahead of anything I'm capable of doing. I listen to a lot of music,...commercial, homemade...everything...ALL THE TIME. And this is radio-ready.

See, I could bitch about the compression, but why? Everything is compressed to death in the real world today, and this fits.

Wow...love the song.

Man.You are one lucky talented dude to get to work with these groups.I LOVE the hook of this tune.I'll listen to it again over and over and see if I can add some comments to the mix.Sounds good as is.If this has no extra mixing or eq'ing I just need to give up now.This band has got a hook goung on big time with this tune.Beatles harmonies with distorted guitars.I dig it.

[edit to add]If jamal had this guy producing him his tunes would jump to the highest level.Jamal seems to write in this vein.

I FOUND SOMETHING

The guy's using the wrong word.

"And the rest is compromised of the less important..."

The word he meant to use, is "comprised." I would actually re-track that line; it makes them look like dumbasses, and if they're pitching this...well, I'd re-track it.

Not your fault.

[edit] I'll speak for Jamal and say I agree with you Kramer. It's funny you mentioned it, b/c he actually might get to work with a super-heavyweight (no name dropping here)... It's a cool story, but I won't tell it here. I hope Jamal does something huge. :D

What's that effect you got going on with the backing vocals? It sounds like they have a keyboard line following them . . . perhaps a vocoder, or just some serious pitch-shifting, because they don't sound particularly natural, which I'm assuming was intentional effect.

Whatver it is, it's very effective in the context of the song.

The only critique I have is very small . . . and that is that I'm not completely thrilled with the sound of the kick drum -- just not quite tight-enough sounding for this particular type of song.

I suspect you have a bright career ahead of you, Darth. You're lucky to be working with such good bands, but I'm also assuming they're lucky to be working with you. Keep it up.

Damn. This site gets blocked (I'm at work) for containing "adult content". Must be the weiner thing.

Its a really good song and the playing is good and the recording/board mix is excellent as usual.....

but Im just not into this.....after the intro, they lost me.....kinda reminds me of "That Thing You Do".......

Incredibly good song and mix...

Gonna listen to this again and again. Great job indeed !

Great recording- mix...performance...
Like the crisp gtr-drums...........The intro kinda suggested a different kind of song

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to listen!

Chris: The name of the band is Second Saturday. As for the word "compromised", I don't believe he meant for the word to mean "composed of," but rather a "compromise of time". Kinda like the rest of his day is compromised by all of the other less importing things that he has to do throughout his day. In this case, he should have said "compromised by" instead of "compromised of". The way that you were suggesting would fit also, but it would give a different meaning, albeit a meaning that would be fitting!

Chess: There is a keyboard part that follows some of the BGvox. I agree with you on the kick drum. I was debating on whether or not to go with a boomy kick drum (long release on the massively compressed kick drum) or a punchy one (gated and compressed: short release), and on my monitors the boomy sounded great. I just listened to it in the car, and it doesn't sound as good. On my parents' stereo, it sounds great. I'll have to hear it on a few more stereos before making a final decision, but I have a feeling that I'll end up going with a tight/punchy kick.

Again, thanks to all for your time!

Ahhh....gotcha'.

You knew I was kidding about the "jackass" comment, right? I do stuff like that sometimes and then I forget to followup. :D

ok im downloading...the anticipation is KILLING ME......

WELL ALRIGHT!!!

how much is it ?...and where do i sign up??
this sounds great ...harmonies ..wow.....oh yeah while im here your old "creed you suck" thread was on the front page a few days ago..alot more comments if your interested...this is a great song...great production...my stomache hurts....

again
humbled.
jamal...i really like the background key parts in the outtro...

excellent.
(edit)...just out of curiosity is this strictly you mixing...or do you help with guitar sounds and such...that make sense??...do you just stay primarilyBEHIND THE board...im askin because i hear "feeble weiner" tones in this.....or do u seek out acts that have this kinda sound??

VERY Impressive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is some seriously nice mixing. The music isn't my style but the mix itself is excellent. What are you doing to get that ultra polished vocal sound, i love it. As long as you are at it how was the rest of it tracked, and mixed...man that was like polished and perfect sounding to me.

Nice job on the tracking!

I second chess on the kick, and I don't dig that snare either. I think that has more to do with the drum itself ( and perhaps the drummer as well) than your recording skills. Get that drummer another snare, put some tension on the heads and/or tell him to hit the damn thing!:D

I won't comment on the tune itself......;)

listening with Sony MDR-V600 headphones plugged into a Sharp stereo with 'loudness' turned on.

drums are too mushy. the level on that low tom is up there though. it really jumped out at 2:35

vocals sound perfect, maybe need to come up a hair. guitars sound perfect.

man your vocal sound is killer!

these guys sound a lot like the other guys that you posted. are they related?

what kind of effects were put on the lead vocal? I hear them alot in punk music, but never knew what they were exactly...

Great stuff, the snare sounds a little live compares to the rest of the song, other than that, this is already too good :)

This is gonna be a long reply...I can tell...(honestly written as the first sentance of this post.)

Chris: I knew you were just kidding, of course! I've corresponded with you enough to know that you wouldn't be a total dick like that!

Jamal: Thanks so much. I was definitely not limited to only mixing this (actually, it's just a board mix...not mixed at all!) I got the guitar tones (tweaked the amp and guitar), tuned the drums, helped with the arrangement, recorded all of it, and then did some compression and EQ so I could have a board mix to post! I do the same with FW, which is why you hear the same tones. For the record, if you wanna record, my number is 555-5555, or you can instant message me at 'DarthFaders', or email me at DarthFaders@aol.com. Here's my card :D :D :D

Analytical Man: I attribute the vocal sound to a great singer, a great mic, and a great preamp. There is a lot of processing that goes into it for me, but I attribute processing to about 20% of the vocal sound.
As for the setup, here it is....

6 channels of Aphex 107 pres
2 channels of Aphex 207 pres

Kick= D112 through a 107
Snare top = SM57 through the 207
Snare bottom = Audio Technica 3528 through the 207
Floor Tom = Senheiser MD421 through a 107
Overheads = Two Groovetube AM52's through 107's
Guitars = SM57 through the 207
Bass = direct through the 207
Keys = direct through the 207
Vox = U87 through the 207
My engineering equivalent of the deathstar/secret weapon = I'll NEVER tell!

M Brane: I already seconded Chess on the kick, I totally see it after hearing the board mix on several stereos. As for the snare sound, I think it's okay. We were going for "beach rock" drums and vocals, with more modern guitars. For what this band wants to sound like, I think we nailed the tones (other than the kick, which will be changed!) Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Eric: No, they're not related! Just the same producer/engineer/mixer/drum tuner/guitar tone getter/arranger! Take off those headphones and listen to the tune on your monitors (and please, depress that loudness button!) No really, I agree about the vocals coming up a bit. I just did a board mix (not touching any faders at all) and got the level where it was good for most of the song. There are definitely some fader rides that will happen on most of the tracks, but that will come within the next week or so.

A1A2: No effects, just compression and EQ. I think it is really just the singer's voice that gives it that sound. As I learned earlier from listeing to the mix on different systems, I agree that the snare is a bit to bright. I plan on taking out a hair of the high end. Great call, A1!

Again, thanks to all for your time and comments. It means a lot to me. I'm tired as hell now!
