Hi folks,
I was wondering if any of you masters of the audio world could help me with something. I am buying a Tascam 788 in a few days, and Im wondering about the future flexibility of using it in conjunction with one of the software products out now (sound forge, CuBase, etc.) Do any of you do this? I like the idea of being able to incorporate sampling into my recording, and this seems like the easiest, most edit-able way. Any input would be much appreciated..... thanks a bunch

There's every reason to believe that it will work, and work well. I use my digital recorder (Fostex D1624) and my DAW (PC/Cubase) interchangeably- and I often record simultaneously to both, or fly tracks digitally from one to the other. The 788 has MTC Sync capability, if I remember correctly, which means that you'll be able to slave a DAW to it, and record in sync with it, and move tracks around in a time-accurate way between it and a DAW.

A sometimes-collaborator of mine has brought his 788 over several times. While I've never flown tracks in digitally via SPDIF on my DAW, (simply because I didn't feel like crawling around behind the rack to plug in the cable...), we certainly could have done so. I skimmed the manual just in case we'd even need to do it in a hurry, so I know it can be done.

Get the 788, and start working with it. Learn it *well*: it's a remarkably potent little box. Then, when you need more capabilities than it can offer, you can think about building a computer-based system to mung things further. But in the early going, don't swamp yourself with the complexity. You'll be surprised how much you can do with the box, if you really dig in on it.

You might also want to check out this link, as it will take you to the tascam.com 788 support forum: http://209.216.16.19/cgi-bin/ubbcgi...88+Digital+Portastudio&number=13&DaysPrune=10
Just a quick glance reveals that there are lots of good ideas there for the taking, with just a little time spent searching and reading interesting topics...

Hope that helps.

thanks skippy
