would i essentially be creating more cpu headroom by routing tracks to individual outputs on my motu 2408 as opposed to having my computer "sum" in real time to 2 outputs?

seems logical, does it not? it certainly "feels" like i have more power... hhmm

You have found the answer by looking inward, grasshopper! :)

can you deal to two players faster than to 8?.....

your processor can only do 1 thing at a time (most likely), summing internally will be tween hard drive and processor and waiting and feeding two outputs.

the other way is hard drive being shuffled to say 8 outputs by the cpu with just moving data and few floating point computations.

I will take a wild ass guess and say it will be a near thing. if you have xp or 2000 you can do a realtime cpu utilization graph.........naw...its more fun to guess.
