In the box, or rack units?

Hey all,

Ive been wondering about this for quite a while. When it comes to say limiters/compressors/reverb ect, Would using plugins be as affective as having say a rack unit? also if you were recording to the box what would be the best way to link a compressor to the chain, would it be once it is recorded put the compressor on, or put it on when your recording?, and dose anyone know any good diagrams for linking up some rack units into my chain? im pretty lost when it comes to them.

I only have cheap outboard which now only gets used in a live rig as I prefer VST processing/effects for recording. If I had some decent quality outboard gear I reckon I'd be looking to incorporate it into my setup though.
