So....I've got a PC with 10 gigs and about 100mgs of ram, and a mackie 1404 mixer. Currently, I want to be able to work out layers of drum machine based loops, add live percussion at my home, and transport them to the big studio where I am recording my album. Eventually, I would like to dedicate an entire computer to music..most likely on a mac. I want to be sure the components I get work with both PC and Mac.
I am a sea of ignorance in regard to setting this whole vision up.I I am guessing I will need:

Sound card (I don't need anything too fancy, 4 inputs? Maybe two since I'm working with the Mackie?)

Mixing/Editing software (the Studio I'm recording in uses Pro Tools 5/ Digital performer, Mac of course)

Good drum machine (Old school? Software based? Keyboard?)

Some type of interface I would imagine?

And a good sturdy external CD burner

It all seems so overwhelming.................can't........hold....on...............much ..long...............

I think Logic works on both Macs and PCs and also will work with Protools. Might be the sequencer for you.

tdukex forgot to mention that logic is a high priced software package. somewhere around 500.00. I thought you might like to know.

Logic works with Protools??? I've been thinking of Cross-grading to Logic, but I hadn't heard anything about that. How does that work?

tdukex, also forgot to mention that Logic has a steep learning curve.

much grass

Thanks guys......So.........where do you think I should put my priorities as far as order of purchases?

I would suggest that you pick up a good sound card and a good pair of monitors.

Those are the most important parts of your setup.

peace...

Logics tech support sucks and if they upgrade to the next version you can virtually count on not getting any help with an older version.

Pro Tools 5.0 Newbie

I Just down loaded Free Pro Tools 5.0 about a month ago. The first day I had it, I recorded a song immediatelly. Really easy to use. But, since then It does not work anymore? I have the record enabled on various tracks and then single tracks but it does not pick up the mic. The green light is on but not picking anythng up. I can hear the mic through the speakers being amplified but still no dice on the tracks.

1. The mic and cable work, I have tried them on other amps and outlets etc.

2. I recorded a song the first day, so I know the download worked.

3. I downloaded the software again yesterday and it has the same problem now.

4. Is there some sort of mute button not visible on the screen?

Any help for this newbie would be appreciatted. Thanks

sound card

So....I'm looking at sound cards and I think I want one with 4in/4out 1/4", S/PDIF (for when I get keys going or a dat).
Does this sound like a good idea? Or should I just get a midi sync box later?
Any card suggestions......I want to spend around 250.
