Hi, everyone.
Well, I'm not a newbie to recording, but, I am a newbie here. ;)

Anyway...
I have basically gotten my vocals exactly as I want them, as far as levels and compression and all.
I record to pre-made backing tracks, and that in and of itself is a challenge, as a great many of those are mixed horribly.

My style is that I'm trying to keep the dynamics of yesterday... think Orbison and 60's Elvis movie soundtracks; but, have it to where when friends and family play my songs in the car, they don't have to hurry and turn me down when I start singing louder.

Everything is in place except for EQ.

Here is my chain...

JS Noise Filter, set to the 27 area

Backstage Vocals (a low cut filter)

Kjaerhus Classic Compressor... this first one is set to default attack and release, but I have the ratio at 2, and makeup gain at 2, with a threshold of -7.2

Kjaerhus Classic Compressor... this second one is set to a 1.99 ms attack, and a .389 s release.
Ratio of 3:03, and threshold at -15.2. Makeup gain of 3.2

You guys would not believe how tying these same 2 compressors together in this way makes a voice sound so big, yet so natural.

Anwida DX Reverb... I choose a setting depending on the song.

SX Mono Button (the Backstage Vocals somehow makes mono signals turn stereo, but besides that, the Anwida Reverb sounds, to me more authentic when switched to mono)

What I am missing at the end of this chain is a good vocal eq.
A free one LoL
Kjaerhus does have a "warm vocal" setting on their Classic EQ, but to me, it isn't 'warm' enough.

See, Backstage Vocals does, indeed, cut out rumbly frequencies, but can be a bit shrill for my ears.
I don't need any presence or brightness... just to add back some warmth, without making the vocal overly bassy again.
Hard to explain.
I know where my problem area is... it's between 210 and 230 hz.
I don't know of any good sweeping eq's, where I could just kinda gently roll it off some.

So... any ideas?
If ya know of any better low cut filters than Backstage Vocals, I'm all ears. LoL
A good eq? While I tend to make my own rules with compression, I like presets on most other stuff.

Thanks, everyone.

What DAW are you using?

Most come with pretty reasonable EQs.

Try Reaper as a DAW. It comes with an impressive array of plug-ins

Try ReaEQ from Cockos. It comes with Reaper, but you can grab it for free even if you don't use Reaper. It's my go-to EQ for everything. Fully parametric, and it has a nice graphical display.
