as of right now im using a epiphone les paul classic and a boss ds-1 distortion pedal. my problem is when i change to tone to get the nice buzz saw sound i loose the fatness of the lower tones. would a overdrive pedal help me achieve this sound, i'm looking for a kinda of Tool sounding guitar, dark with some definant pressence.

any ideas????

What kind of amp are you using? I would say it's alot more about the amp than the distortion pedal!

I agree. I think you should be getting most of the distortion, tone, and presence from the amp, and using the distortion box to push the amp over the edge into the sound you want.

well thats the thing i go into my DI Box, out of that into my mixer, then out of that into my soundcard, that's how i'm recording. the only amp i have is a crappy dean markley amp which i don't even use because it's such crap.

well, "fat, ripping tone" will be, to a large extent, out of your reach if you are limited to plugging an effects pedal into your mixer......However, If that is what you want to do, try an effects pedal that has amplifier modeling to and not just a distortion pedal. As in the generally hated, but often useful POD! Or a behringer V-Amp.

yeah, i was really hoping that wasn't the deal. i guess i'll try mic'ing that old amp and see what i get.

Mesa and Sans Amp both make good distortion pedals.

I think the Mesa is the V-Twin and the Sans Amp... god... I forget the name now.
