To Grandpa Bill. Written and performed at his memorial service by grandson Mark Wade.

Born William George Hughes of Irish descent 1925. Died 2010 in his hometown of Salem, Oregon, leaving June, his wife of 58 years. Father of five, including my wife. Grandfather to all of our children.

Raised in Portland, Oregon by Sherman and Alice Cochran, tavern owners in St Johns.

B.S. in forestry from Oregon State University. M.S. in administration from Syracuse University. Career forester for the State of Oregon.

Served in WWII as Sergeant in the Army during the U.S. incursion into France. Proposed to his wife June via mail from France, and the mail man knelt on her front porch for Bill to present her ring and ask for her hand in marriage.

Lover of all things Irish, especially the red headed ladies, and a glass of Guiness. Loved to say "If you're lucky enough to be part Irish, you're lucky enough".

Lover of Oregon and all things outdoors, mainly because it looked so much like Ireland.

Always had a kind word, a wink, and an Irish Blessing for all occasions. As honest as the day is long.

If you're going to listen to this, please do so with a glass of your favorite holiday spirit in hand, as he certainly would have wanted it.

RIP Bill.

The song is called "Letters to June" and it is here: Letters to June 2011_12_21.mp3 - File Shared from Box

Yes, nice recording. Especially the vocal. Touching.

Best to you Bill /raises glass/. You did well.

Great sounding acoustic, nice vocals - just the right amount of reverb.

I like simple guitar and vocals stuff. sounds like a second guitar doing a little lead - are they panned a little left and right?

sounds great!

Fantastic song, performance and recording. What a wonderful tribute.

Gentlemen, thanks for the kind words. I'll be sure to pass on the feedback to Mark.

Aaron, only one guitar, three mics. cardiod down the middle, figure of 8 left, figure of 8 right.

Great tune - just great. Mark is terrific. Being Irish, I truly enjoyed it.

The acoustic's low end sparkles. What was the mic chain -- meaning what mics and pre amps were employed?

Kevin, this was our first try with new mics on acoustic guitar. I normally use SDCs but we decided to try something new on this one. The guitars were recorded with a Josephson C700a (two channel mic) at the 12th fret about a foot and a half away. A Beesneez Arabella about 6 inches to the right of the sound hole and about a foot and a half away. The Josephson went through Avedis ma5 pre amps through metric halo converters. The Arabella went through a LaChapelle 583s. Some low end eq cuts and a little Valhalla Room reverb set on Dark Nostromo Hall and tweaked a bit.

Such a beautiful simple tribute to a lost friend. We've all gotta go, but it always seems so sad when someone who was so real and good meaningful vanishes. I salute him, though I never knew him. Here's to you Bill!
