Okay, so I want to improve my guitar tone for live and recording purposes. For this I will be buying a tube amp and lots of pedals. At the moment I have a marshall mg50fx, so my question is which should I buy first? The pedals or the amp?

Amp all the way. Pedals only enhance certain qualities IMO. Actually, the tend to suck tone away from a good amp when the amp already has good tone.

Which came first....the chicken or the egg?

Pedals are cool and it's nice to have a bunch for messing around with...but besides your playing style, the amp is what establishes your fundamental guitar sound.
If there is some flavor of music/guitar sounds that your prefer and want to emulate...see what those guys are using and use that as your starting point for picking out the right amp.

Amp - and that will inform exactly what pedals, especially in the overdrive/distortion/fuzz area, you actually need...
