ive been playing guitar for years and STILL cant put my strings on in such that a way that is not embarassingly inept looking....im sure it cant be good for the intonation....im not a chops player and like sloppiness in general but how do i get that perfectly wound coil type deal

thanks

The heavier wound strings may have to be chopped (do this after you wind on the string) so they dont keep overlapping on the spindle, keep tension on the string while winding and feed it in a nice neat place!

The Strat I just bought has the old style keys that you put the end of the string into a hole in the center of the spindle. That means that they have to be cut off before you wind them. I only cut one too short during the first stringing.

I like to have the string go around about 3 times, but no more than 4. Maybe 5 on the little ones.

I might suggest that you get a simple electricians crimping tool (different than pliers). This will help create two crisp right angles in the string at its insertion point and exit point in the key, which is especially useful in keeping the thinner strings in a tight coil. I use one whenever I re-string.

After re-reading the original post

I think ronin was looking for a way to bend the excess string back into the headstock and have it look halfway decent without having to cut it off. I've seen photos online of this before but I can't remember where. I normally trim mine after stringing.
