As you know,I'm constructing a iso-vocal booth. I want ABSOLUTELY DEAD acoustics as I will be using my DSP for 'verbs, chorus etc.. I prev'ly asked if I should carpet this room and was informed that this would not contain the low end bass frequencies.
Question:
Though a wooden foundation seems perferred(sic?),can 1 use
basic plain floor tiles?. Booth is big enuff for small 3 piece band but to be basically used for vocals.
As I am constructing on the cheap, what would overall be the
best,acoustically,(and financially)for the floor/foundation.
Carpet,wood,tiles or another choice?
Thx

Whatever fits your budget, and is hard. Just keep in mind that you want a hard surface and let your mind go wild with possiblities. I never really thought of tiles, it would most likely work. Myself, I'm probably going the way John was talking, about just finishing the concrete. I have to become a pro at finishing the concrete first though, I'll have to do a few test spots in the part of the basement that isn't studio. It's funny, as big as my studio is, and it's pretty big for a basement studio, I still have about 200 square feet of basement for storage.

John and Brian,I haven't sent update pics yet as the wall
I constructed with built-in window collapsed and had, again,
start all over.I neglected to securely brace the wall against the basement beam and my 12 year old nephew threw
a basketball at it thinking it would bounce back but instead
knocked it to the floor destroying the window. I was ready
to fling my nephew out the window when I realized he's not
worth going to PRISON for,so I banned him from my basement,
re-built the wall again, bought a disposable camera and took
some more pics. They s/b ready by next Wednesday.
Sorry 4 the delay!

OUCH!!!! You have to make your walls with the same mentallity we use. We look at a wall, pound on it a bit, get a feel for how strong it is, use big animals as models... "a rhinosorous couldn't knock this wall down! an elephant could though..." Actually, I wish I COULD re-do a couple walls we did at the beginning. We tried spreading our work evenly around the studio as to not leave any section behind, which we did sucessfully, but still, we STARTED building the walls on the control room side of the studio, since it didn't have any complicated angles or anything, and then worked our way to the far end of the live room. The isolation room, which was the last to be framed, just looks awesome, and very planned out. The control room looks like crap. But no one will ever know once we get it done... Hell, I bet 99% of people wouldn't even know it's not perfect anyway.

I'll have an update soon too. We just got like 3 rolls of film developed so we should have a BUNCH of pictures to show everyone. When I get it all updated I'll start a new thread.

Well, finally got off my ass and starting taking pictures. Gotta get it developed, then I'll get it scanned and put up.

Started doing some real recording stuff, too, rather then just playing around. Damn, this is fun. Such a rush.

I just wish I could actually make music (rather then recording my fiancee), but I guess getting this close will hafta do. :)
