i'm right smack in the middle of one...kind of an "over the hills-far away" thing....

http://artists2.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Trouble/

the song is "take it all".

this one starts out with acoustic guitar, then kicks into a full band thing.......

the hi hat is coming out...... only there for count in........
there is a typical verse-verse-chorus-bridge thing happening, but there are no vocals yet on this version........

i used a new kit on my drum machine....... and can't decide if i like it or not........

any opinions would be helpful, as i go into my last phase of adding parts........

there are 2 more acoustic lead and harmony parts, for the beginning.......

there are 3 vocal parts coming, one lead, to harmony......

the solos sections were done with an amp sim, direct.....
i think they are horrid, and are going to be live amp-miced.......

YO! A Brotha represent'n the BEEHIVE STATE!!!

Damn, gonzo. This is beautiful. Beautiful acoustic. Then the heavy stuff kicking in... ahh.... great dynamic. God, I love this! :D I love major 7th chords + hard rock!!! This thing drives like a friggin MACK TRUCK!!!

Mixwise, I'll hit ya later... the snare sounds weird to me (for one) but I'll catchya later. Your leads remind me of Edgar Winter...

Late!!!

this is real good man!! i love the transition.

and i like the kit your using for drum's

i can't wait to hear it in it"s finished glory!!

and the monitors say...

...listened on monitors... and it sounds BETTER :)

Beautiful doubled acoustic guitar (OR are you playing both parts at once, ala Michael Hedges ?! )

When the B-part of the intro (acoustic) kicks in, there's a nice, subtle change in reverb... changes the mix-depth. Very pro-sounding :)

The heavy part comes in! There's a build up at about 700-800Hz right in the middle of the stereo field, probably because that's where the guitars, bass, and snare are... you'll probably pan them out of the way for vox?

MAN, is that a kick ASSS bassline! Guernica would be proud :)

I love the progressive-rock-ness of this.

The snare... it *does* sound a bit dark, and low in the mix... some boomy bass right at 3:21...

Otherwise, excellent! Maybe you'd go back to the acoustic, or an acoustic-version of the chorus after the loud part... just to give the song some more dynamics? In a song (actually a turd compared to yours ;)) I'm working on right now, fairly comparable in volume, I decided to go to an acoustic guitar during the second bridge... for some dynamics... otherwise, it's just LOUD LOUD LOUD...

Yea, keep workin on this! Once others subscribe to your thread, they'll tell ya the same thing ;)

Dude, if I had any talent at all (seeing that you're in SLC) I'd say let's get together with JR#97 hang out and have a mini-jamfest here! :)

PS: It may help to give some other people's song a listen, specifically B.SABBATH, King Elvis, mkg, chrisharris, theron.... and as many others as possible. Some guys will only listen to your stuff if you give theirs a spin. :)

hehehehe...

Man, I just wanted to let you know that I listened this afternoon, about 12 seconds after you posted it...and I thought it kicked ass. You're obviously looking for "sonic" advice, and I just don't have anything to offer other than a big huge thumbs up...I was saving my response for when this thread became in danger of falling off the front page, but what the hell.

"You're Good."

:D
:D
:D

And you've got a fan with a great attitude and knowledge base in Participant...

(and you don't have to listen to my shit for me to say that)
:D

truly excellent, professional work,

I am familiar with your work from the VS Planet. Now, I could swear that I heard this song a couple of months back on that site. Correct me if I am wrong on that one. No, I KNOW I heard this before cause I know I dug it then and I am digging it now. You are a great player, the sound you are getting with the amp sim is great...which one do you use??
Great mix as always...monster playing
I like it as an instrumental!!!

Real good playing. I like when this kicks into high gear and it really flys ...

The mix sounds good over here. Some of the playing reminded me of Brian May from Queen.

You did a great job and this sounds great!

Keep it up, man!

Kick ass.... Although I never heard anything even close to Over The Hills... not a bad thing. You a Steve Vai fan? The MP3 process added too many artifacts to the acoustic. But I loved the acoustic arrangements and subtle presence throughout the tune. I really dug the harmonized parts, but there a few parts where a not-harmonized part following a harmonized part might have been a nice change. Something like a harmonized melody line followed by a blistering non-harmonized lead for a few bars. You did a few ascending runs like that, but in my head I was hearing some more non-harmonized solo work. I"m trying to think of some examples, but not come to mind right now. I'm too busy grooving to your tune..... anywho, nice work. I am now your biggest fan. Be afraid....

p.s. do you have a band? I have an internet band comprised of some online friends in the Rocky Mountain area... Salt Lake, Boise, etc... Rocky Mountain Oyster Cult. You and Participant need to hook up with us on some projects.

Killer playing dude.I like the whole thing. The drum machine is the only downside to this tune. It's just not powerful enough.Maybe a little reverb on the toms and snare would give it a little more ass.Real drums would set this song off like a jet rocket.

Man,this is some stellar playing.Love the harmony guitar lines.

I was wondering who that was.I d-loaded the vocal and piano tunes the other day on the front page of Nowhereradio.Good stuff.

woh... those weren't me.. those were some arrangement ideas for someone else I'm doing that tune with. Probably an abuse of nowhereradio, but I couldn't find any other way to get her the ideas. Anywho, I'll post some of our stuff soon. Sorry to mislead!

wow. thanks for all the replies............

participant-
thanks for listening..... edgar winter, eh......... or is it johnny....... i mean, i'm anglo, but not that white!! LOL ;)
the acoustics are simply multitracked, there's only 2 right now, i'm thinking of adding 2 more right on top of each other, just to make it thicker........ not copied tracks, but actual played tracks. Page used to do this trick.
interesting you caught the reverb presto-chango...... i'm just experimenting.....
the build-up, yeah, vocals are all over the place, i've got to work on placement if i want to keep those frequencies in the guitar and bass mix......
The bass line i like, the playing i like, the sound i hate..... i'm trying to scrape up some cash to purchase a Carvin Bolt bass kit, and build my own. My current bass sucks ass.
You're idea about breaking it down to the acoustic again is a good one..... i may play with that...... i'll track some more acoustic tonight and see........
and thanks for the heads up on listening to the others......... will do.

fenderlikingood-
what a great moniker! you like the kit, eh? it's a tough call, i've always gravitated towards heavier rock sounding kits, and i got to thinking that i should try something completely different than my first gut reaction, which to me, seems to be common...... so i picked a kit that had a high pitched snare, versus a fairly low kick
now the problem with drums for me is, the zoom 123 i use is really limited, and i can't mix and match the pieces/parts..... it's all of a kit, or none....... in the future i hope to gravitate to pc-generated kits, using acid or something like that.

chrisharris-
i'm glad you liked the tune..... i'll post it as soon as i get the next mix done, hopefully with the vocals complete.......

king elvis-
yes, you did hear it on the planet..... i posted before my daughter came for the summer, and i haven't touched it since then, and now i'm getting geared back up.....
the amp sim was a modified soldano. i tweaked and tweaked, then put a little echo on it.....
it's very strange feeling playing through a sim, i'm a died in the wool tube dude...... all the rhythms are my mesa boogie at volume, with a at4033 at about a foot away.....

boydrj-
brian may is a complement. i don't know if it's the choice of notes, or the sound of that sim..... not my normal sound........ i wonder if it will have the same effect after i re-track it with a real amp? thanks for checking it out......

jr#97-
yeah, the over the hills thing was just because of the acoustic versus electric thing at the intro....... i do like vai......
the mp3 process, yes, it does wierd things to the sonics........ the 160kbs version sounds better, but iuma wont let you post anything over 128..........
mixing up the harmonized with some straight lines isn't a bad idea........ i've only got a couple of spots where i'm doing any lead stuff, and they are really just bridges between vocal sections...... but i may could drop a line here and there, and mix it up.........

Kramer-
thanks for checking it out, and i agree with you about the drums. it's just a tool to get the idea of the song across....... i'll try some new reverb settings, and maybe some selective eq around the snare frequencies to see if i can bring it out more........

thanks again for the positive recommendations!

Listening now...
Man, I love these acoustics. Then *wham* in come the electrics, beautiful! I think I listened to a version of this one at vsplanet also.
Wow, sweet lead comes in... then Zep-like riffs...drums and bass laying in well...I'm diggin' this...now tempo change...and then back to the signature riff.
Really liking this tune...whoa, here comes a Brian May-type lick, harmony guitars.
Gonzo-X, this is cool!

Holy Shit! You gotta be kiddin me! Excuse me while I go cut my fingers off!

Nice sound on the acoustic intro. Yeah real drums would make a big difference, but the song is sooooo good I barely noticed.

I didn't think the amp modeler sounded horrid, but you're already miles beyond what I can achieve with my modest setup. So that kinda depends on your frame of reference. You've already got the kind of sound many of us are striving for.

Please let us know when it's finished. I'd love to hear more.

Works for me. Real good playing. Nice job of mixing things up, adding things, taking them away, bringing them back, etc. Always needed in an instrumental. Good job.

Dude, your an excelent guitarist. Soloing is like a mix between Eddie and Brian May. Hope thats a compliment. A bit shready at times but cool. Shread=melodies worst enemy (sorry its just mi). But you kind of shread to a note, then shread to another note, then shread to another note, which kinda gives melody anyway.
I know you used an amp sim and a drum machine, but I'd dig to (just dreaming) lend you my drummer and marshall stack. Actually I reckon you need a Vox AC30 for your solo sound. Cranked like Brian use too. Everytheeeng on 10, but with tone control at bass=10, mids=0, trebble=0. At that volume it would scream out nicelly inbetween notes.
Apart from the 4 count, leave the hats in the acoustic intro. It gets your head rock'n early up. Very important.

this is great ... I want to hear it with the vocal ... got kind of tierd at 3 min ... :) sounds excelent ... good playing... agree on drums comments .... and also would like more defenition on that bass line ... very nice...
cheers

It is kinda tough evaluating a mix, when missing the main element of vocals. But, it is nice to hear some people who can play in addition to getting nice sounds on their equipment too. I find many comments on music of this caliber to be mostly opinions..and mine's a thumbs up. Only gripe might be the repetitiveness of it...but vocals could change that dramatically.

Whoa, excuse me? Abuse of NoWhereRadio?

Simple: If you post it, it's there. If you don't it's not.

I don't do that s***t

WOW WOW WOW!!!!! :D:D :D :D
Holy crap! That's some first rate playing there bro.................I'm impressed.........I think this will be a great song with some vocals. I'm not gonna bother to critique it 'cause it's so damned good. I'll just wait for the vocals.
