Great thread! One of my favs is the milk bottles in the middle of Yes' Roundabout. The story goes that they were in the studio, still at it at something like 5:00 AM when the idea struck, and actually "lifted" the milk bottles from the porches of some nearby houses. That was back in a place and time when milk was delivered to your doorstep in glass bottles, and they picked up your emptys at the same time.

Don't discount the triangle either. Damn I wish I could remember that song.... But a fastish and rythmic alternating opened and muted "holder hand" on the triange can add a surprisingly cool groove to an upbeat song. For parts, not the whole song, generally.

Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith.

I was impressed with the cash register in Pink Floyd's money song when it first came out in quadraphonic.

Anything by Pink Floyd is genius. Listening to the albums was one thing, watching pulse was just another! The tone that man gets on his guitar, is truly the work of a God.

That might very well be the one I was thinking of. I'm pretty sure. Thank you! It was driving me nuts!

Can't really think of any off the top of my head other than most Pink Floyd songs.

I like adding a shaker track with acoustic guitar rhythm parts. Triangle is also nice to help give the drum sound a little more high end sparkle. Having a tambourine that matches the hi hat rhythm can also add a cool texture.

Lyle Lovett's Joshua Judges Ruth has some great production. The opening track - "I've been to Memphis" has a great sounding bare piano track, then an amazing sounding snare comes in, and finally the glorious sound of Lyle's Collings guitar. I love to crank this one up!

And, yes, tambourine is everywhere, if you are listening for it. Don't discount the triangle either. Damn I wish I could remember that song....

You stopped before describing the fat bass that slides in on the next measure, the band that's tighter together than Church Lady's knees, and the simple, up front, clean lead vocal by Lyle :). Yeah, that is definitely one of the best productions from a guy that is known for great productions to begin with.

I'm finding lots of intersting "things" in Velvet Underground stuff.
Cool EQ on the drums and maybe various cymbal choices, hand claps here and there, nice percusive guitar tones and creative panning on some parts to add a bit of "excitement."
