According to UPS calculations, I should be receiving my MR-8 today! I hope it will be in good condition. I purchased it as a "scratch & Dent" item from MF to save a little $. I have spent too much on gear over the past 18 months or so. Therefore, when I found this one for $203.00, I figured it was worth a gamble. With the savings, I can also justify purchasing a bigger CF card in the future if I feel it is necessary. This "S&D" MR-8 is still covered by the MF guarentee, so if it is messed up in any way or missing anything, I have 45 days to return it.

Oh well, I am anxiously waiting the UPS guy. I'll let everyone know how my "Scratch & Dent" experience turns out. If it is good, it might be worth looking into those items through MF in the future. They often have pretty amazing deals on guitars and other musical equipment that has been returned or has a minor blemish. I have had excellent luck with all the new gear I have purchased through them in the past. We will see...

Sincerely,

Mike

I got a scratch and dent MR-8 from MR a few weeks ago, and it works GREAT! I even got a mic cable thrown in for free. Have fun!

$203?? I paid like $215 for my scratch and dent lol :)

Let us know how you like the MR-8 once you start messing around with it.

Take Care :)

Mine is supposed to be here thursday. I think I'm coming down with something. I don't know if I'll be able to go to work thursday. I think it will be a 24 hour something-or-other!:D

Hmm. I have had that same "something-or-another" for well over a month now. It all started when I got my MR-8......

OK, my MR-8 arrived a couple hours ago. It looks to be in PERFECT condition. The unit looks pristine, all the literature is there, and the power supply looks like it has never been out of the box. The box itself has half the photo torn off the front. I think that might be why it was in "Scratch & Dent".

jackybabay72, I actually did call in sick today, but not because the MR-8 was coming. I had to repair some plumming that took a dive last night--really, really.

adams, all the "Scratch & Dent" Mr-8's I have seen have been priced at $260.00. So, you got a great deal too. I don't know why mine was $203.00. It seems fine?

I reved up the Marshall, slapped my SM57 in front of it, hit "play' and "record" yada, yada, yada, took out the CF card, put it in my card reader and holy night...music came through my computer's sound system! It was not half bad either. the volume level was a little low, but with many more hours of reading and, figiting, I will have something.

This thing is going to be a blast.

As for the "recording time constraints with a CF card" discussion--nonsense. This thing transfers tracks to computer so seamlessly it is a complete non-issue for me. I am stoked!

I have found that with my SM57, there is no way to get high enough levels with the MR-8. Even with the trim all the way up and the mic right next to the sound source, its still too low. There is another thread where someone else was having this problem, and after taking his MR-8 to the music store, they figured out that the MR-8 pre-amps aren't so hot. Not sure if everyone is having this problem though. When I use a Studio Projects B1 condensor mic (with seperate phantom power), the levels are great.

Take Care :)

He's just waiting for the next batch of MR 8 newbies, so he can point out how they didn't buy a full blown recording studio replete with session musians, and fully stocked bar to boot.
Oh yeah, and the above named studio also takes a 4 year old only 10 (count 'em, 10) minutes to be up and running, able to record a heavy metal symphony with 27 mics, and several outboard effects, and, of course, the system comes with a 5 year contract with the major studio of your choice, terms negotiable.
Oh, I should also mention, all this is only us$200.00 more than than the MR 8. On Ebay. And did I mention that extra hard drives are only 37 cents, or some such thing?
And that if you buy the MR 8, he will only shake his head sadly....

Yeah, he will be "sad yet amused" at our posts of how much fun we are having. But nothing can ever be as fun as his VF-160! Let's not forget that.

great post dyuob! lol

The sad thing is that PeteHalo might have had some ideas worth listening to if he had offered them in a spirit of friendship, encouragement, and civility.

Pete offered his experience and honest opinion. He never
attacked a person on this board. I deem MRX's comment about
Pete is childish and meaningless.

True, but on the other hand, Unlike him, I never referred to other peoples' opinions or posts as "unbelievable crap" either....

Pete has done nothing but put down anything that we like about the MR-8 AND he furthermore not only exaggerates about the pricing of (other) fostex products (hence dyuob's post), he also fails to address any common sense logical replies that we may have for him. He may not be arrogant and pretentious, he sure gives some of us that impression.

judging form how many posts you have on this board bluesbear, I am not sure if you have seen some of his "finer" moments..

I beg to differ. He (Pete) was, at best, condescending, and at worst, elitist, to the detriment of the spirit of learning that is enjoyed within these BB walls. He never offered advice on how to use the MR 8 to it's fullest extent, instead, he pointed out the supposed weak points in one's choice of recording equipment, irregardless of whether it was asked. I am glad he found joy in the recording equipment he espoused, but he needed to realize that others may have a different opinion.
I am here to learn more about the MR 8, I own one, I like it. I do not need to have some one look down their nose at the equipment I use just because it doesn't meet their needs. It meets mine. I did not buy it because I wanted to impress any one other than myself. It impresses me, and I am happy with my purchase, I do not want some one standing around, snickering about how I was "taken". I was not "taken". I am happy with my decision, now, I need to learn more about it, not what Pete thinks I need.
end of rant.
Time for bed.

and yes, I do recall him making a statement about how american's want everything easy but still bother with the mr-8
what crap

bluesbear,

So many things come to mind, but I don't want to see another 10 page thread on this subject. Our collective debate with Pete was something that is very common in this type of forum. The fact is that MR-8 users on this forum have been exceptionally civil.

Take a look at some other forums to help fine tune your definition of 'personal attack.'
