OK I already asked the question a while back but didn't get the answer I wanted... Here's my problem:

First off, I'm gonna try to describe my voice... My father told me I was a "bariton"... When I speak, you could compare my voice level to one of a opera singer speaking... When I speak to someone in a club, I don't even have to get really close to the person I'm speaking with for them to hear me... I bet with that description, ya'll can understand my voice is really loud...

Now, here's my setup:

My voice is going through a StudioProjects C-1 then through a VTB-1 then through a RNC and then into my computer in Cubase SX (I have the Waves Gold Bundle plug-ins to help me with my quest )...

I'm a rapper, and the problem I have is that when I rap, my voice just seems too clear... If I'm with other rappers on a track, I'll just come off too clear compared to all the other rappers...

Now, what I want to know:

1- Where should I place myself compared to the mic.
2- Which settings would be best on the VTB-1
3- Which settings would be best on the RNC
4- Anything else I should do to my voice when in it's in the computer... (I'm already limiting it with the Waves L1 Ultramaximizer...)

If you guys ever recorded someone with my type of voice and found out what works best, please tell me cause I think I'm gonna break everything in my studio real soon... :D

Thanks in advance,
Beathoven

I am no expert (and never had this problem), but I'd suggest trying out a dynamic mic like the Elecrovoice RE20 or even SM57/SM58. The latter two are cheap enough to go out and buy and try. Alternatively, if you have access to any tube mics like the Sony C800G, these are firm favourites with many Hip-Hop producers. Even some older ribbons may even help? The C1 has a presence lift, so you could try a little EQ whilst recording. A 3db cut in the 10-12K region?

If I am talking bollocks, please put me right people! I'm sure someone out there can help this guy out?

You could try www.sospubs.co.uk and sign up to their forum. I'm not saying it is better than this site or that the people know more, just that you stand a better chance of receiving help by speading the word!!

I have an SM58, thanks for the info... I sang through it on some of my older songs and it's true that it mixed better...

I just thought that a large cardioid and a dynamic couldn't compare...

Peace,

This might sound weird

But check out some of scott walkers stuff. He was in the walker brothers and did loads of stuff on his own. Several albums just titled Scott through to Scott 4.

He has a very low voice at times, maybe listening to some other material might give you ideas and stuff on how to record your own voice.

Hope this helps :)

Or maybe a Shure SM-7 or Sennheiser MD421... also plug the RNC into the insert on the VTB-1 and maybe start with the RNC in the Super Nice mode and the threshold -5, ratio 2:1, attack 1.0, release 0.5 and from there tweak to to taste.

I dont mean this in a bad way but maybe your voice is just not
suited for that style of music.
Im mean really you wouldnt hire Dolly parton to due a rap tune would ya?
